Agartala, Aug 22, 2025: Tripura has launched a new agricultural initiative aimed at diversifying crops and improving farmer earnings. Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the introduction of exotic fruits such as mangosteen, rambutan, and avocado, while also expanding potato seed production across the state.
Exotic Fruits Bring New Opportunities
Minister Nath highlighted that Tripura’s climate and soil are suitable for cultivating high-value fruits. He said that exotic fruits would give farmers an alternative to traditional crops and open access to premium markets.
The government plans to distribute saplings to farmers through state nurseries. Agricultural scientists will also provide technical guidance to ensure healthy crop growth. The minister stressed that these fruits, once cultivated at scale, could transform the state’s agri-economy.
Farmers in districts like Sepahijala and Gomati have already shown interest in planting rambutan and avocado. These crops are expected to fetch higher prices than regular seasonal fruits in both domestic and regional markets.
Expanding Potato Seed Production
Alongside fruit diversification, the state is prioritizing potato seed production. Tripura has been dependent on imports from other states for years, but the new program aims to make it self-sufficient.
Minister Nath revealed that seed potato cultivation would be expanded under controlled conditions. The project involves scientific storage and distribution, ensuring that local farmers have access to quality seeds.
This initiative not only reduces costs for farmers but also strengthens Tripura’s position as a potato producer in the Northeast. With consistent quality and high yields, the state could even become a seed supplier to neighboring regions.
Government Support for Farmers
The minister assured farmers that the government is committed to supporting them through subsidies, training, and marketing networks. The Agriculture Department has tied up with local Krishi Vigyan Kendras to provide on-field assistance.
In addition, the government is planning awareness campaigns to educate farmers about cultivation techniques and potential markets. This approach will help small and marginal farmers adopt exotic fruits and benefit from potato seed programs without financial risk.
Strengthening Agri-Economy
Tripura’s agriculture sector contributes significantly to its rural economy. With most families depending on farming, diversification is seen as a way to ensure sustainable income.
Officials said that the new projects are aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling farmer income. The state is also exploring tie-ups with private companies and agri-startups to create direct market linkages.
The government has promised to improve cold storage infrastructure, as many exotic fruits are perishable and require proper handling. This step will reduce post-harvest losses and make products market-ready.
Farmers’ Response and Future Outlook
Farmers’ associations have welcomed the initiatives, saying that introducing high-value crops is a much-needed step. Many believe that exotic fruits will attract buyers from metropolitan cities, boosting demand.
The potato seed program has also raised hopes of reducing input costs for local cultivators. Farmers said that if the state ensures proper storage and distribution, dependence on imports will soon end.
Experts believe that if implemented effectively, these projects can transform Tripura into an agricultural hub in the Northeast. With exotic fruits and quality potato seeds, the state has the potential to generate higher rural incomes, create jobs, and strengthen food security.
Call to Action
The government has urged farmers to participate actively in the new programs. Interested cultivators can approach local agricultural offices for saplings, training, and technical support.
The success of these initiatives depends on collective efforts from the government, farmers, and private stakeholders. With innovation and diversification, Tripura’s agriculture sector is set for a brighter future.
