A new controversy has shaken Tripura’s political and administrative circles after revelations surfaced that land measuring 0.22 acres in the Udaipur Sub-Division was allegedly allotted to a foreign national whose address, on official documents, is listed as Bangladesh.

This incident, involving prime land under the jurisdiction of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), has triggered serious concerns about legal violations. Furthermore, administrative lapses, and national security implications.

The questions swirling around the allotment highlight potential gaps in land governance in India’s Northeast and expose vulnerabilities that could be exploited for illegal migration or fraudulent identity creation.

Several legal experts and local leaders have expressed shock that a non-Scheduled Tribe (ST) individual, and a foreign national at that. Also, could acquire land in a Sixth Schedule area protected under the Constitution.

Land under the Sixth Schedule is meant exclusively for the indigenous tribal population. Safeguarding their rights and cultural identity.

“How can a non-ST individual, especially a foreign national, be allotted or allowed to buy land in a Sixth Schedule area?” asked a local leader, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Silence in Mainstream Discourse

Observers have also pointed out that if such an incident had occurred in mainland India. It would have likely sparked nationwide outrage and extensive media coverage.

However, because it involves Tripura, a northeastern state that often remains on the fringes of national discourse, there’s a noticeable silence from central authorities and mainstream political parties.

“This incident is not merely about land. It’s about how systemic lapses can undermine national security,” said a senior journalist tracking Northeast affairs.

Disappearance Raises Alarm

Equally alarming is the fact that the Bangladeshi individual and his family. However, after allegedly securing the land documents, reportedly disappeared without a trace.

With official land papers in hand, they could have easily obtained crucial Indian identity documents like passports, PAN cards, Aadhaar, and voter IDs.

Such documents could then be used to establish legal residency. And, vote in elections, or even migrate to other parts of India without detection.

Political Connections Under Scrutiny

Purna Chandra Jamatia, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the TTAADC, shared the relevant land documents with public figures and activists, who are now demanding answers.

There’s growing suspicion that such an allotment could not have happened without political knowledge or at least silent consent from some quarters.

“Will the Election Commission of India (ECI) intervene? The then Deputy Collector & Magistrate (DCM), Revenue Officer, and Tehsildar are clearly implicated. Such actions cannot happen without political protection,” said a local activist familiar with the developments.

Identity Politics and Security Risks

The incident touches a raw nerve in Tripura, a state with a complex history of migration, demographic shifts, and tribal rights movements.

Political observers warn that if left unchecked, such incidents can have far-reaching consequences for security, electoral integrity, and community trust.

“The land scam could be just the tip of the iceberg,” said a political analyst. “It’s possible there are other instances of foreign nationals obtaining land or documents fraudulently, which could alter the demographic balance and political dynamics in the region.”

Public Figures Speak Out

Prominent voices from the Tiprasa community have expressed concern that they might be attacked or discredited for bringing these issues into the public domain.

But they insist it’s their duty to expose such realities, regardless of the political fallout.

“I know I’ll be attacked by some political friends for raising this. But it’s my duty to speak the truth,” one activist said.

What Lies Ahead TTAADC

The incident has placed the spotlight firmly on the Tripura government, the TTAADC, and the ECI.

Citizens, activists, and political leaders are demanding a transparent investigation. And immediate corrective action to safeguard land rights and national security.

There are calls for accountability and reforms in how land records are verified and how administrative clearances are granted. Particularly in sensitive Sixth Schedule areas.

Call to Action

Public vigilance and pressure are critical to ensure that such cases do not disappear into silence.

Citizens and civil society groups are urged to stay engaged. And demand answers from the authorities.
