The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Tripura over the next four days. The state government has instructed all district administrations to remain alert and take preventive steps. Tripura districts told to prepare for possible flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas.
This alert follows the development of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which may intensify and affect several northeastern states, including Tripura.

IMD Issues 4-Day Weather Alert
According to the IMD bulletin, the weather system over the Bay of Bengal is gaining strength and moving northward. It is expected to trigger widespread rainfall and thunderstorms in Tripura from May 30 to June 2.
As a precaution, Tripura districts were told to prepare for rainfall exceeding 70 mm per day in several areas. The IMD has placed parts of the state under orange and yellow alerts during this period.
Meteorologist Dr. R. Das stated, “This system is capable of bringing intense downpours. Districts should monitor rainfall data closely and act quickly in case of emergencies.”
Administration Activates Disaster Management Protocols
In response, Tripura’s Revenue and Disaster Management Department has asked all district magistrates to activate emergency response teams. Relief centers are being made ready, especially in areas prone to seasonal flooding.
The department directed local authorities to keep boats, rescue gear, food supplies, and medical kits on standby. Control rooms will remain operational 24/7 to coordinate weather updates and public communication.
An official from Gomati district said, “We’ve identified vulnerable areas and already started awareness campaigns. Our teams are ready to act as needed.”

Districts like Dhalai, Gomati, South Tripura, and West Tripura are expected to experience the heaviest rainfall. Many of these regions have a history of flooding and erosion during the monsoon.
Local officials are inspecting embankments, clearing clogged drains, and alerting people living near rivers or unstable slopes. Authorities have also advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the warning period.
To prevent electrocution risks, power supply lines in flood-prone zones are under review, and maintenance teams are on alert.
Bay of Bengal System Intensifies
The current low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal continues to strengthen due to warm sea temperatures and favorable wind conditions. Meteorologists believe it may develop into a depression within the next 48 hours.
As a result, Tripura districts are told to prepare not just for rainfall, but also for strong winds and lightning, particularly in the southern and central regions.
Neighboring states like Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam are also under similar alerts. The northeast is expected to bear the brunt of this system as it moves inland.
Citizens Urged to Stay Vigilant
Tripura’s Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has appealed to citizens to cooperate with the administration. People are advised to stay indoors during intense rainfall and follow updates from trusted sources.
Local bodies have launched public advisories through loudspeakers, social media, and community volunteers. Travelers have been advised to postpone non-essential trips, particularly in hilly and rural areas.
Residents in vulnerable zones are keeping emergency kits ready and shifting valuables to higher ground as precautionary measures.
Schools, Transport May Be Affected
While no closures have been officially declared, schools and colleges may shift to online mode temporarily if conditions worsen. State transport services are also on alert, and routes through landslide-prone areas may be suspended temporarily.
Airport authorities in Agartala have enhanced weather monitoring and advised airlines to prepare for potential delays or cancellations due to poor visibility.
Construction activities and excavation work in open areas have been paused in some districts to prevent soil erosion and accidents.
With Tripura districts told to prepare for four days of intense rainfall, authorities are working proactively to reduce risks. Coordination between the state government, IMD, and disaster response units is in full swing.
