In the ongoing war against drugs, Tripura Police seized 80,000 Yaba tablets near the Assam border. The estimated market value of the seized narcotics is around ₹4 crore. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.

This operation reinforces Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s strong push against cross-border drug smuggling under Tripura’s anti-narcotics initiative.

Interception Near the Border

The arrest was made during a routine check in the Churaibari area of North Tripura, which lies close to the Assam border. Further, police flagged down a suspicious vehicle on National Highway-8. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found to contain packets of Yaba tablets cleverly hidden in a false compartment.

The arrested individual, identified as a 34-year-old resident of Tripura, was taken into custody under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

What Are Yaba Tablets?

Yaba is a synthetic drug made primarily of methamphetamine and caffeine. It is a powerful and addictive stimulant often smuggled into India from neighboring countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh. Nevertheless, due to its cheap production cost and high demand, it poses a major threat in the Northeast.

Yaba has earned the street name “crazy medicine” due to its severe psychological effects. Although, it is known to cause aggression, hallucinations, and long-term neurological damage.

Crackdown Under Chief Minister’s Vision

This successful seizure is part of Tripura’s ongoing anti-drug drive, a top priority under CM Dr. Manik Saha’s leadership. The government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach toward drug trafficking and has intensified border surveillance with the help of Tripura Police, BSF, and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Earlier this year, the Chief Minister declared Tripura would “not allow the state to be used as a transit corridor for drugs”. Moreover, regular training, inter-state coordination, and intelligence-led operations are being conducted across sensitive zones, especially in North Tripura, Sepahijala, and Dhalai districts.

Police Officials Speak Out

Superintendent of Police (North Tripura), Debasish Das, said the success was the result of credible intelligence input and swift field coordination.

“We had inputs about a possible Yaba consignment moving from the border region toward mainland Assam. Our team acted promptly and intercepted the vehicle before it could cross state lines,” Das stated.

He added that more arrests could follow as the investigation uncovers the drug trafficking network. Also, authorities are currently verifying whether the arrested suspect has links to larger inter-state or international syndicates.

A Pattern of Seizures in Recent Months

This is not the first such seizure in Tripura. Over the past six months, law enforcement agencies have recovered over 3 lakh Yaba tablets, along with heroin, brown sugar, and cannabis. Most of these recoveries have been made near border checkpoints and inter-state routes.

The strategic location of Tripura makes it a prime target for traffickers operating between Southeast Asia and mainland India. However, recent crackdowns are sending a strong message across smuggling networks.

Public Support and Awareness Crucial

Authorities are also urging the public to report suspicious activity. Awareness programs in schools and villages are being conducted in collaboration with local NGOs and Panchayats.

Also, police helpline numbers and WhatsApp alert systems have been made active to encourage community-led intelligence sharing.
