The Tripura rail line initiative has gained momentum after the Centre approved a final location survey for a new railway corridor in the state. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating the process. They also expressed gratitude to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for supporting the proposal.
The proposed railway line aims to improve industrial connectivity in West Tripura. It will link the Bodhjungnagar Industrial Complex with the national rail network. The state government sees this move as a major boost for trade, logistics, and economic growth.

Centre clears survey for Tripura rail line initiative
The Ministry of Railways has approved a final location survey for a new rail line between Jirania rail yard and the Bodhjungnagar Industrial Complex. The proposed stretch will cover around 14 kilometres. The survey will cost an estimated Rs 42 lakh.
Northeast Frontier Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed the approval. He said the survey marks a key step before construction begins. Therefore, the Tripura rail line initiative has officially entered the planning stage.
Officials believe the survey will help finalise alignment, land requirements, and technical feasibility. After this stage, the Railways Ministry can take a call on construction timelines.
CM Manik Saha thanks PM Modi and Railways Minister
Chief Minister Manik Saha welcomed the decision and thanked the Centre for the initiative. Tagging a letter from the Railway Minister, Saha posted on X that he was grateful for the sanction. He specifically mentioned the proposed rail track from Jirania to Bodhjungnagar Industrial Estate.
Saha said the Tripura rail line initiative would strengthen connectivity in the region. He added that better logistics would support industries and improve overall economic activity. According to him, infrastructure projects like this play a vital role in Tripura’s growth story.
Moreover, the Chief Minister stressed that industrial connectivity remains a priority for the state government. The new rail line aligns with that objective.
Transport Minister highlights industrial and public benefits
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also welcomed the approval of the final survey. In a Facebook post, he said the Ministry of Railways had taken an important step for Tripura. He described the Tripura rail line initiative as a boost to railway infrastructure.
Chowdhury said the proposed Jirania–Bodhjungnagar rail line would act as a dedicated corridor. It would mainly support the movement of industrial goods from the Bodhjungnagar hub. As a result, industries could reduce dependence on road transport.
He added that improved rail access would benefit industrialists, traders, and the general public. Faster and cheaper logistics would also help businesses expand operations.
Boost to Bodhjungnagar Industrial Complex
The Bodhjungnagar Industrial Complex is one of Tripura’s key industrial zones. Several manufacturing units operate from this area. However, limited rail access has remained a challenge.
The Tripura rail line initiative aims to address this gap. Direct rail connectivity can reduce transportation costs and improve supply chains. Therefore, industries may gain easier access to markets outside the state.
Officials expect the project to attract fresh investment into the industrial estate. Improved infrastructure often encourages businesses to set up new units.
Wider impact on West Tripura economy
Beyond Bodhjungnagar, the new rail line could support growth in neighbouring areas of West Tripura. Better connectivity can encourage the development of ancillary industries. It may also create new employment opportunities.
Chowdhury said the project would support regional economic growth. He added that infrastructure development often has a multiplier effect. Therefore, the Tripura rail line initiative could benefit a wider population.
The government expects improved rail links to ease pressure on roads. This may also improve safety and reduce traffic congestion.
Strengthening Tripura’s rail infrastructure
Tripura has steadily expanded its rail network over the years. The Tripura rail line initiative adds a strong industrial focus to that expansion. Unlike passenger routes, this project prioritises goods movement.
The initiative also aligns with the Centre’s Act East Policy. Improved connectivity in the Northeast remains a national priority. By strengthening internal rail links, Tripura can integrate better with national supply chains.
Way forward after survey approval
Once the final location survey is completed, the Railways Ministry will review the findings. Based on the report, authorities will decide the next steps. These may include land acquisition and project sanction.
Transport Minister Chowdhury thanked the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister, and the Railway Minister for the initiative. He said the project reflects the Centre’s commitment to Tripura’s development.
Overall, the Tripura rail line initiative signals a strong push toward infrastructure-led growth. If implemented on time, it could transform industrial connectivity and boost the state’s economy.
