Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has officially requested Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to convert the existing single-line rail track between Lumding in Assam and Sabroom in Tripura’s South District to a double-line rail track. In a letter addressed to Vaishnaw on Wednesday, Chowdhury emphasized the pressing need for this upgrade to improve connectivity and boost economic activities in the region.
Chowdhury highlighted that the current single-line track, which connects Assam to Sabroom, is insufficient to handle the increasing volume of passengers and freight. The existing infrastructure limits the capacity and efficiency of the rail services, causing delays and affecting the overall transportation network. He argued that a double-line track would significantly enhance the operational efficiency of the railways, accommodate more trains, and reduce congestion.
The demand for a double-line track comes amid growing regional development projects and an increase in trade activities that require more robust and reliable transportation links. The South Tripura district, where Sabroom is located, has seen a surge in economic activities and infrastructure development, making the need for an upgraded rail link more critical. The new rail line would facilitate smoother and faster transportation of goods and passengers, thereby promoting economic growth in the region.
Chowdhury’s letter also underscored the strategic importance of the rail link. As a key route connecting northeastern states with the rest of India, enhancing this track would not only benefit Tripura but also improve the overall connectivity of the northeastern region. The proposal for a double-line track aligns with broader plans for infrastructure development in the region and supports the government’s efforts to boost connectivity.
The Union Railway Minister has yet to respond to the request. However, the move has garnered support from local leaders and residents who view it as a significant step towards improving their transportation infrastructure. If approved, the project could mark a major development in regional connectivity and economic progress for Tripura and neighboring states.
