In a proactive security measure, Tripura held a Tripura counter-terror drill on Saturday at its Secretariat. The exercise aimed to evaluate the state’s readiness and coordination in the face of potential terror attacks.
High-Stakes Simulation for Maximum Readiness
The mock drill began early in the morning and involved multiple agencies, including the Tripura Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), and health authorities.
Senior officials said the objective of the Tripura counter-terror drill was to assess how swiftly different departments could react in a coordinated manner.
“Preparedness is crucial. Such drills help us identify gaps in our response mechanisms,” said Dr. Vishal Kumar, West Tripura District Magistrate.
Scenario Mimicked Real Terror Attack
During the exercise, a scenario was staged where armed assailants “stormed” the Secretariat complex. Gunshots were simulated, and smoke bombs were deployed to create a realistic environment.
Security forces swiftly evacuated staff while a specialized team neutralized the mock attackers. Emergency medical personnel were seen providing first aid to “victims.”
“Speed, precision, and inter-agency cooperation were the key takeaways,” said DGP Anurag, who supervised the drill.
Officials Laud Coordination
Chief Secretary JK Sinha praised the efforts of all agencies. He stated that drills like the Tripura counter-terror drill are essential, given the evolving nature of threats nationwide.
“Terror tactics change, so our strategies must evolve too. Today’s exercise was a significant step in that direction,” he said.
Observers noted that security protocols for entry and exit at the Secretariat were also tested rigorously during the drill.

Tripura, like other northeastern states, faces unique security challenges. The region shares borders with Bangladesh, making it susceptible to cross-border threats.

“We have to remain alert. Proactive measures are better than reactive responses,” said DIG Rakesh Dutta.

“We must fine-tune our plans to ensure no lives are lost in real emergencies,” said Fire Services Chief Rajiv Deb.
Plans are underway for more drills, especially in high-density areas such as Agartala’s markets and railway stations.

Authorities urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate during drills. Leaflets were distributed to Secretariat staff explaining safety protocols during a terror attack.
“Security isn’t just the responsibility of the police. Citizens play a crucial role in maintaining safety,” said Dr. Vishal Kumar.

The Tripura counter-terror drill also boosted confidence among staff and security personnel. Many employees said they felt more aware and prepared to respond in a crisis.
“Earlier, we only heard about terror threats in the news. Now we know how to react if something happens here,” said one Secretariat employee.
