The Maharaj Bir Bikram (MBB) airport in Agartala, Tripura’s capital, is on the verge of achieving international airport status. This progression aligns with the burgeoning trend of Northeastern airports attaining international recognition, exemplified by Guwahati’s LGBI airport and Imphal’s Bir Tikendrajit International airport.

A Significant Leap for Tripura’s Aviation

The imminent international status for MBB airport marks a major milestone in Tripura’s aviation infrastructure, fostering increased connectivity with neighboring countries. Chief Minister Manik Saha, during the unveiling ceremony of a bronze statue honoring Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur, affirmed the government’s commitment to swiftly establishing air connectivity with Bangladesh from the MBB airport.

Attributing this progress to the collaborative efforts of the BJP-IPFT alliance government in Tripura and the Act East Policy of the central government, CM Manik Saha highlighted the airport’s robust activity. Currently, 30-32 flights operate regularly, facilitating the travel of over 4000 passengers daily.

CM Manik Saha reiterated the state government’s persistent efforts and ongoing dialogues with the civil aviation ministry. The aim is to address formalities related to immigration and international air connectivity, crucial steps toward achieving international airport status.

Expressing eagerness, CM Manik Saha stated, “We are engaging with the central government to resolve the necessary formalities relating to immigration and international air connectivity.” The government envisions inaugurating the first flight to Chittagong in Bangladesh at the earliest opportunity, reinforcing Tripura’s growing significance in the regional aviation landscape.

Established in 1942, the Agartala airport holds historical significance as a technical base for the Royal Air Force during World War II. Renamed after Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur in July 2018, the airport’s transformation into an international hub aligns with the region’s increasing prominence.
