In a significant move to strengthen electricity services, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has launched a major infrastructure upgradation programme across Agartala city. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted and technology-driven power supply amid rapidly rising electricity demand.
Officials said transformer capacities at key sub-stations are being enhanced to improve voltage stability and overall reliability.

16 MVA Transformer Commissioned at NSRCC
As part of the modernisation drive, TSECL successfully commissioned a new 16 MVA transformer on February 17 at the NSRCC power sub-station. This marks the highest-capacity transformer ever introduced in Tripura’s power distribution system.
The newly installed unit replaces the earlier 8 MVA transformer. Consequently, consumers are expected to experience reduced voltage fluctuations, fewer transformer failures, and more stable power supply.
Officials described the installation as a milestone in the state’s energy infrastructure development. They added that the upgrade will immediately ease pressure on the existing network in Agartala.
Rising Power Demand Prompts Phased Plan
According to TSECL sources, electricity consumption in Agartala has increased sharply over the past few years. Rapid urbanisation, commercial expansion, and higher domestic usage have put considerable strain on ageing infrastructure.
Therefore, the corporation has adopted a phased sub-station-level development plan to address long-term needs. The focus remains on boosting transformer capacity and improving grid resilience.
Managing Director Biswajit Basu stated that the city’s power load has been growing at an annual rate of 15 to 20 per cent over the last three years. He emphasised that the current upgrades are designed with future demand in mind.
Capacity Expansion at Pragati Vidya Bhavan Sub-Station
Further strengthening of the power network is underway at the sub-station adjacent to Pragati Vidya Bhavan. Work is scheduled between February 19 and March 3 to install two additional 16 MVA transformers.
Once completed, the total capacity of this sub-station will rise from 15 MVA to 32 MVA. As a result, the facility will be better equipped to manage increasing loads and ensure improved voltage regulation in surrounding areas.
Officials believe this enhancement will significantly reduce the risk of overloading and service disruptions.

Upgrade Planned at Badharghat Stadium Sub-Station
Similar augmentation is planned at the Badharghat Stadium sub-station. A new 16 MVA transformer will be added alongside two existing 7.5 MVA units.
With this addition, supply reliability in adjacent localities is expected to improve substantially. Authorities expressed confidence that once the works are completed, residents and businesses will experience more stable and uninterrupted electricity services.
Temporary Outages and Future Expansion
Basu acknowledged that alternative arrangements are being made to maintain supply during the upgradation process. However, he cautioned that temporary outages may occur in certain areas.
He appealed for public cooperation during the renovation period. Furthermore, he announced that similar modernisation initiatives will be implemented in other districts and sub-divisional towns in phases.
Toward a Modern and Reliable Power System
The ongoing infrastructure push reflects TSECL’s broader commitment to modernising Tripura’s power system. By increasing transformer capacity and upgrading sub-stations, the corporation aims to ensure long-term improvements in electricity services.
Once the renovation programme is completed, Agartala is expected to witness significant positive changes in power reliability and voltage stability. The initiative also positions Tripura to meet future energy demands with greater efficiency and resilience.
