Two minors suffered bullet injuries on Thursday morning when BSF jawans of the 81 Battalion opened fire to stop a smuggling attempt near the Indo-Bangladesh border in Putia under Kalamchaura police station. The jawans rushed the injured boys to Bishalgarh Hospital, and doctors later shifted them to GBP Hospital in Agartala. Both minors are now undergoing critical treatment in the trauma centre.
BSF Fires After Group Ignores Warnings
According to Kalamchaura police station sources, the incident occurred around 10 AM. A BSF patrol spotted a group of people running toward the border fencing to smuggle Indian goods into Bangladesh. Two minors were also present among them.
The jawans repeatedly ordered them to stop, but the group ignored the warnings. To prevent the smuggling attempt, the jawans fired, and the bullets hit the two minors. The boys collapsed while the others escaped from the area.

Locals Assist in Evacuating the Injured
After the firing, BSF personnel and local residents carried the injured minors to Bishalgarh Hospital. Police said they have not yet confirmed the identities of the boys. The incident has created tension in the Putia border region, prompting security forces to tighten surveillance.
Chaos in Cattle Market During BSF Chase
In a separate incident earlier in the day, panic broke out at a weekly cattle market when BSF jawans entered the marketplace while chasing suspected smugglers. Their sudden arrival startled buyers and sellers, who ran in different directions, abandoning the trading activity.
The market remained closed for the rest of the day after the chaos.
Border Area on High Alert
Local traders claimed that smugglers often use the cattle market as a cover to transport illegal goods. BSF has strengthened patrolling in the area to curb such activities. However, the sudden chase added to the tension already building along the Sonamura border.
Authorities have deployed additional forces and are closely monitoring the situation to restore normalcy.
