Police in Agartala have arrested 13 individuals following a surge of violence and anti-social behaviour that overshadowed the recent Durga Puja festivities. The arrests are the result of a concentrated police effort to address multiple reported incidents, including serious assaults and public disturbances across the city.

Rana Chatterjee, Officer-in-Charge of the West Agartala Police Station, confirmed the details on Sunday. The police station has registered several cases encompassing violent scuffles, physical assaults, and attacks that occurred during the week-long religious festival.

“Thirteen persons have been arrested so far,” Chatterjee stated. He outlined the ongoing legal processes, noting that the accused are currently in various stages of detention and court presentation, with some in police remand and others scheduled to be brought before a court as their remand periods expire.

Assault Over Eve-Teasing Among Key Incidents

The arrested individuals are linked to several high-profile incidents that caused public alarm. One particularly disturbing case cited by OC Chatterjee involved a man who was severely assaulted after he objected to the eve-teasing of his wife. The accused in this specific case are among those now in police custody.

Other incidents under investigation include a public clash within the police station’s jurisdiction. Additionally, the police detained three individuals late Saturday night in the Dashamighat area following a scuffle involving a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) trooper.

Non-Bailable Charges Filed

The severity of the incidents is reflected in the charges filed against the accused. OC Chatterjee confirmed that all arrested persons are facing prosecution under various non-bailable sections of the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These serious charges include those related to grievous hurt and attempt to murder.

Legal proceedings have been formally initiated for each registered case, and comprehensive investigations are ongoing to ensure thorough justice. The police response demonstrates a zero-tolerance policy for violence, especially during public festivals, aiming to restore order and safety in the city following the holiday period.
