A major accident was narrowly averted on Sunday morning when a Dharmanagar–Agartala DEMU passenger train collided with a small truck carrying brick chips near SK Para Station under Longtharai Valley subdivision.

According to eyewitnesses, the truck attempted to cross the railway line through an unofficial and unguarded crossing frequently used by local residents. Unfortunately, one of the truck’s front wheels got stuck on the track, leaving the vehicle stranded as the train approached at speed.

The train pilot, upon spotting the obstruction, immediately began sounding the horn multiple times to warn people nearby. Despite frantic efforts by the driver and several bystanders to push the vehicle off the track, they were unable to move it in time.

Moments later, the passenger train struck the truck, dragging it for a short distance before halting. The impact threw the vehicle off the track but, miraculously, no passengers or locals were injured. The train sustained only minor damage, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic accident.

Railway officials commended the quick thinking and alertness of the train pilot, stating that his immediate response helped prevent a possible loss of life and major damage. Authorities also confirmed that train services were temporarily halted for inspection but resumed shortly after ensuring track safety.

Local residents, however, expressed concern over the lack of safety infrastructure at the spot. They pointed out that several such unofficial crossings exist along the route, regularly used by villagers due to the absence of designated level crossings. Many urged the Railway Department and local administration to install proper barriers, warning systems, or a manned level crossing to avoid similar close calls in the future.

The incident serves as a reminder of the growing need for enhanced railway safety measures in semi-urban and rural areas of Tripura, where unauthorized crossings remain common. Officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway have assured that a detailed report will be submitted and necessary safety assessments will be undertaken soon.
