International Achievements and National Success Define a Historic Phase

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy on Tuesday said that the year 2025–26 will be remembered as a bright and historic milestone in the sporting journey of both India and Tripura. He highlighted that the period has been marked by unprecedented international achievements and Tripura’s impressive performance at the 69th National School Games.

Sharing his views through social media posts, the minister stated that India’s rise on the global sports stage, along with Tripura’s growing success at the national level, has opened new horizons of confidence, capability and potential. According to him, this phase will be remembered not only for medals and records, but also for the discipline, hard work and mental strength behind these achievements.

India’s Breakthrough Performances on the Global Stage

Highlighting India’s international sporting success, Roy recalled Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra’s historic javelin throw of 90.23 metres. The throw marked India’s long-awaited breakthrough beyond the 90-metre barrier and became a defining moment in Indian athletics.

He also mentioned Sheetal Devi’s gold medal at the Para Archery World Championships, calling it a proud achievement for para sports in the country. Similarly, Devika Sihag’s victory at the Thailand Masters in women’s badminton added to India’s growing reputation in international badminton.

In chess, Divya Deshmukh created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup. Meanwhile, Indian boxing also made headlines as Jasmine Lamboria (57 kg) and Meenakshi Hooda (48 kg) won gold medals at the Liverpool World Championships.

Strong Medal Hauls in Major Championships

Roy further noted that India secured second place at the Asian Athletics Championships with eight gold medals. He described the result as a clear indicator of the country’s rising strength in track and field events.

Additionally, India delivered its best-ever performance at the World Para Athletics Championships held in Delhi. The contingent won a total of 22 medals, including six gold, showcasing depth and consistency across events.

Historic Wins in Team Sports

In team sports as well, India enjoyed a series of landmark victories. The minister highlighted that the Indian women’s cricket team won the World Cup for the first time. At the same time, the men’s cricket team clinched the Champions Trophy, further strengthening India’s dominance in the sport.

He also mentioned that the women’s blind cricket team lifted the World Cup, while the youth football team emerged champions at the SAFF U-19 Championship. In hockey, the men’s team won the Asia Cup, and the men’s youth hockey team secured a bronze medal at the World Cup.

Tripura Shines at the 69th National School Games

Turning to Tripura’s achievements, Roy said the state has significantly strengthened its presence on the national sports map. At the 69th National School Games, Tripura’s athletes won a total of 20 medals. This included six gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals.

He described the performance as a reflection of growing confidence, discipline and sustained effort among young athletes. According to the minister, the success also highlights the effectiveness of grassroots sports development in the state.

Vision for a Stronger Sporting Future

Concluding his remarks, Roy said that India’s international success and Tripura’s steady progress clearly demonstrate what can be achieved with the right leadership, planning and continuous training. He emphasised that unwavering mental strength remains a key factor in sporting excellence.

The minister added that these achievements have laid a strong foundation for the future. With continued focus and support, he said, both India and Tripura can secure a stronger and more glorious position on the global sports stage.
