The 74th Foundation Day of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) was celebrated in Diphu, Assam, on June 23, 2025, with a vibrant display of cultural pride and patriotic fervour. Also, the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from residents, tribal leaders, local officials, and school students.

The celebrations highlighted unity, progress, and preservation of indigenous culture in one of Assam’s key autonomous hill districts.

A legacy of self-governance

The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council was formed in 1951 to empower local tribal communities through self-rule under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

This year’s Foundation Day celebrations were held at Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Stadium. The event began with the unfurling of the KAAC flag and the singing of the state anthem.

Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang paid tribute to past leaders who fought for autonomy. Moreover, he lauded the people’s commitment to democratic governance and community development.

Speeches stress unity and development

In his keynote address, CEM Ronghang called upon the people to work together for peace and prosperity.

“The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council stands as a beacon of ethnic harmony and inclusive growth. We are committed to ensuring education, health, and also, infrastructure reach every corner of our region,” he said.

He announced new welfare schemes and infrastructure projects, including:

  • Improved road connectivity across remote villages
  • Upgraded healthcare facilities at sub-divisional levels
  • Scholarships for tribal students in technical education

Cultural performances reflect tribal pride

Colourful performances showcased the diverse heritage of the Karbi, Dimasa, and other local tribes. Although, schoolchildren performed traditional Karbi dances while folk musicians enthralled the audience with indigenous instruments.

Craft stalls, local cuisine counters, and photo exhibitions depicting Karbi Anglong’s historical milestones drew large crowds.

The celebrations also included a felicitation ceremony for outstanding achievers in education, sports, and social service.

Youth urged to embrace heritage

Addressing the youth, Education Executive Member Raju Bey encouraged them to take pride in their roots.

“Modern education and digital technology must walk hand-in-hand with our values and culture. Further, this dual path will help Karbi Anglong shine on the national stage,” he said.

Students and young professionals shared their experiences through stage talks and posters on the future of tribal governance.

Security and administration ensured smooth event

The event was secured by the Karbi Anglong Police and Assam Rifles. Volunteers from youth groups and civil bodies helped manage the large turnout.

Local NGOs provided drinking water, first-aid booths, and recycling bins, underlining the district’s push for clean and sustainable celebrations.

CM Himanta sends congratulatory message

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sent a video message congratulating KAAC on its 74th Foundation Day.

He highlighted the council’s contribution to Assam’s inclusive growth. Furthermore, praised the leadership of CEM Ronghang.

“The state government will continue its full support to KAAC in strengthening tribal rights, education, and health,” said the CM.
