Assam’s political landscape turned more turbulent on Sunday as Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi demanded the immediate removal of Tourism Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah from the state Cabinet. Gogoi accused the minister of disrespecting journalists and called out alleged scams under his watch.
Akhil Gogoi Takes on the Assam Government
Addressing a press conference in Sivasagar, Akhil Gogoi criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for remaining silent over what he termed “serious misconduct” by Jayanta Mallabaruah.
“The tourism minister’s behaviour towards journalists is unacceptable. His continued presence in the Cabinet dishonours the press and the people of Assam,” Gogoi declared.
Minister Accused of Disrespecting Journalists
The controversy began last week when videos surfaced showing Jayanta Mallabaruah allegedly making disparaging comments towards journalists during an official event. Several journalist associations condemned his statements, demanding an apology.
Akhil Gogoi joined these voices, stating that such remarks undermine press freedom and democratic values.
Allegations of Scams Add Fuel to Fire
Apart from the issue of disrespecting journalists, Akhil Gogoi levelled fresh allegations of corruption against Jayanta Mallabaruah.
“The tourism sector under Mallabaruah has seen multiple irregularities. There’s no transparency in the use of public funds,” he alleged, demanding an inquiry into several tourism projects implemented in recent years.
Gogoi added that public money is meant for development, not for benefitting a select few.
Call for Chief Minister’s Intervention Jayanta Mallabaruah
Akhil Gogoi urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take immediate action.
“If the CM doesn’t remove Mallabaruah, it will show the government is protecting corrupt practices and silencing journalists,” Gogoi warned.
Political observers say the issue could snowball into a bigger controversy if not handled swiftly.
Journalists Stand United Jayanta Mallabaruah
Journalist bodies across Assam expressed solidarity with Akhil Gogoi’s demand. The Guwahati Press Club and Assam Union of Working Journalists have already sought an official apology from Mallabaruah.
“The media is not anyone’s enemy. Ministers must learn to engage respectfully,” a spokesperson for the Press Club said.
Opposition Parties Weigh In
Other opposition leaders, including Congress and AIUDF, also weighed in on the issue. Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia criticised the BJP-led government, saying it has shown repeated disregard for dissenting voices.
“This is not the first time journalists have faced hostility from those in power,” Saikia stated.
BJP Yet to Respond
The ruling BJP has so far refrained from making any detailed statement. However, a senior BJP leader speaking anonymously said, “The party will look into the matter. We don’t support any behaviour that disrespects the media.”
Assam’s Political Climate Heating Up
The row comes at a time when the Assam government is already facing questions over various allegations, including irregularities in recruitment and developmental projects.
Gogoi has positioned himself as a fierce critic of the government, continuously raising issues of corruption and governance lapses.
What’s Next for Jayanta Mallabaruah?
Political analysts believe the coming days are crucial for Jayanta Mallabaruah’s political career.
“If the CM takes no action, it could weaken the BJP’s image among voters who value transparency and press freedom,” said political analyst Dr. Partha Sarathi Bora.
Akhil Gogoi’s fiery call for Jayanta Mallabaruah’s ouster has added fresh tension to Assam politics. As journalists, opposition parties, and civil society watch closely, all eyes are on the Chief Minister’s next move.
