The political situation in Tripura has intensified as the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) renewed its demand for control of the Home Department. The party has long advocated for greater indigenous autonomy and a separate state called Tipraland. Now, the demand has gained urgency after a series of violent incidents involving its supporters in tribal regions.
For the past few days, unrest has spread across Takarjala, Jampuijala, and Khumlung. During this period, groups linked to Tipra Motha allegedly attacked political offices, vandalized property, and clashed with authorities. On Tuesday, the tension escalated further when a mob targeted the BJP office in Khumlung and locked the local police station.

Chief Minister Steps In
In response, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha visited Khumlung. He met officials, inspected damaged areas, and spoke with residents about their concerns. Moreover, he directed police to take strong legal action against those responsible for the violence to prevent further escalation.
Tipra Motha Pushes for Home Ministry
Shortly after the Chief Minister’s visit, senior Tipra Motha leader and Cabinet Minister Animesh Debbarma addressed the media. He demanded that the state government hand over the Home portfolio to a Tipra Motha minister.
According to Debbarma, their party can restore peace faster.
“Give us the Home Ministry. We can bring back law and order within three months,” he said.
His remarks have sparked intense political debate across the state. Supporters believe the demand reflects a justified need for indigenous-led security decisions. However, critics argue that the timing raises serious questions.
Political Debate Intensifies
Consequently, opposition parties condemned the demand and accused Tipra Motha of using unrest as leverage. On the other hand, Tipra Motha supporters argue the government has failed to ensure safety and protect indigenous communities.
Political analysts believe the demand could reshape the ruling alliance’s power structure. Additionally, they warn that the situation may influence future negotiations over Tripura’s governance and autonomy.
Next Steps Uncertain
At this point, the government has not issued an official response. The situation remains tense, and communities affected by the violence are waiting for clarity. As events continue to unfold, the coming days will likely be crucial for both the ruling government and Tipra Motha leadership.
