Guwahati, Sept 28, 2025: Assam CM inaugurates Guwahati flyovers at Adabari and Bhangagarh, marking a major step toward easing traffic congestion and improving urban transit. The projects, launched by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 27, 2025, are expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters.
Assam CM Inaugurates Guwahati Flyovers During Festive Season
The flyovers opened just before Durga Puja, when Guwahati roads witness the heaviest traffic of the year. The Chief Minister explained that the decision to complete construction early came from a desire to reduce festive congestion.
He added: “Our government is committed to creating world-class infrastructure. These new flyovers will reduce long traffic jams, cut fuel consumption, and make Guwahati cleaner and greener.”
Adabari Flyover: Connecting NH-37 and Maligaon
The Adabari flyover connects key routes along National Highway 37, Jalukbari, and Maligaon. This corridor often suffered gridlocks due to heavy vehicles and inter-state traffic. With the new structure, congestion is expected to ease considerably, improving travel time for both cargo trucks and local commuters.
Bhangagarh Flyover: Faster Access to Healthcare
The Bhangagarh flyover, located near the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), holds special significance. Ambulances and emergency vehicles often lost critical minutes in traffic. The flyover now provides uninterrupted passage, which doctors believe will improve patient outcomes.
Why Assam CM Inaugurates Guwahati Flyovers Early
According to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), both projects were originally scheduled for completion in late 2025. However, construction was expedited and completed months ahead of schedule. The combined cost of the projects stands at more than ₹200 crore.
Officials highlighted that the flyovers were designed with modern load-bearing capacity, ensuring durability for the next several decades.
Public Reaction to New Flyovers
Commuters welcomed the new additions, with many calling them a “much-needed relief.” Business owners around the Adabari area expect an increase in footfall as easier access will attract more customers. Residents near GMCH expressed relief that traffic snarls would no longer delay ambulances.
Assam’s Broader Infrastructure Vision
CM Sarma emphasized that these two flyovers are part of a larger development roadmap. Other projects include:
- The upcoming six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra.
- Widening of arterial roads within Guwahati.
- Improved railway and airport connectivity under the Act East Policy.
He reiterated the state’s role as the gateway to Southeast Asia, stressing that infrastructure upgrades will help Assam position itself as a hub of trade, commerce, and tourism.
Linked to National Development Push
The inauguration ties in with the Government of India’s Gati Shakti Master Plan, aimed at integrated infrastructure growth. Guwahati, being the largest city in the Northeast, is central to this vision.
Urban experts believe that smoother connectivity will also boost Assam’s tourism sector, particularly during cultural events like Ambubachi Mela and Bihu, when Guwahati draws visitors from across India.
Remaining Challenges for Guwahati
Even as Assam CM inaugurates Guwahati flyovers, challenges remain. The city faces:
- Rising vehicle numbers leading to new choke points.
- Shortage of parking infrastructure.
- Limited investment in public transport options like metro rail.
Planners argue that long-term solutions must include mass transit systems and policies encouraging the use of electric vehicles.

The two new flyovers mark a turning point for Guwahati. Yet their success depends not only on government projects but also on citizen cooperation. Drivers must follow traffic rules, while businesses and residents should support sustainable commuting. By working together, Guwahati can grow as a modern, efficient, and livable city.
