Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent Assam CM Silchar visit marked a pivotal moment in the state’s ongoing flood management efforts. During the visit, he announced a wide-ranging flood relief plan for Barak Valley, aimed at supporting affected families and strengthening infrastructure against future calamities.

The Chief Minister inspected flood-hit areas in and around Silchar and interacted directly with local residents, relief workers, and district officials. His visit was part of the state’s proactive approach to managing the annual crisis caused by heavy monsoon rainfall.

Flood-Affected Families to Receive Immediate Aid

As part of the Assam CM Silchar visit, the Chief Minister confirmed that immediate financial assistance would be provided to affected families. Each family displaced by floodwaters will receive direct aid for temporary shelter, food, and basic supplies.

He stated that a special relief package will be rolled out through the district administration. Special teams will also be deployed to assess the damage to homes, agricultural lands, and local roads.

Additionally, Sarma assured that there would be no delays in disbursing funds. Officials have already begun collecting beneficiary data to streamline compensation.

Infrastructure and Prevention at the Core

Beyond short-term assistance, the CM’s Assam CM Silchar visit focused heavily on long-term flood mitigation. A new ₹250 crore flood management project has been proposed to rebuild embankments, reinforce riverbanks, and upgrade drainage systems across the Barak Valley.

The Chief Minister emphasized that Assam cannot rely on temporary fixes. Instead, the government will prioritize science-based river engineering and predictive warning systems to better protect vulnerable districts.

He also directed the Water Resources Department to immediately begin pre-monsoon repairs on weak embankments in and around Cachar and Hailakandi.

Public Meetings and Direct Dialogue

Sarma’s Assam CM Silchar visit included a town hall with flood-affected residents at the district collectorate. Citizens shared their struggles with delayed aid, poor drainage, and insufficient warning systems.

The CM listened carefully and directed local officials to resolve critical grievances within 72 hours. He also appealed to citizens to cooperate with flood mapping surveys and infrastructure upgrades that may require temporary relocation.

Local MLAs and ministers accompanied him, ensuring that region-specific concerns were directly conveyed to the state leadership.

Schools, Health Centres to Be Repaired

As floodwaters recede, the focus will shift to repairing schools, health centers, and public utilities that suffered damage. Sarma announced that the Education and Health departments will get special funds to restore functioning in rural areas.

Free medical camps will be organized in water-logged zones to prevent disease outbreaks. The CM also asked NGOs and private hospitals to partner with the government in delivering essential services.

Central Support Also Sought

The Assam CM Silchar visit comes as the state prepares to seek central assistance for flood recovery. The Chief Minister stated that Assam would formally request additional funds from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

He also mentioned that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured full support from the Centre. A detailed report is being prepared for submission to New Delhi later this week.

The Assam CM Silchar visit has laid the groundwork for a more resilient Barak Valley. Through immediate aid, robust planning, and long-term infrastructure projects, the government aims to minimize flood damage and protect citizens in the future.

The visit also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to direct public engagement, transparent governance, and disaster readiness across Assam.
