Assam is set to roll out a proactive measure aimed at bolstering the safety and security of tourists visiting the state. The tourism department is preparing to launch a specialized “tourist police” initiative, a significant move in response to the surge in tourist arrivals observed post-COVID.
New Tourism Legislation
The initiative is part of the new Assam Tourism (Development and Registration) Bill 2024, designed to provide a structured framework for the tourism sector. This legislation mandates every accommodation facility to register with the tourism department.
Drawing inspiration from states like Goa and Kerala, Assam plans to establish specialized tourist police units, dedicated stations, and requisite infrastructure across the state. These units will conduct thorough inspections of tourist spots to ensure the safety and security of visitors.
The concept of “tourist police” was introduced nationwide in 2022, following directives from the union tourism ministry. The aim is to establish dedicated units in all states and union territories, fostering collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to develop comprehensive frameworks, training programs, and standard operating procedures.
Assam’s tourism sector has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. Tourist footfall surged to 98.31 lakh in 2023, a significant increase from 17.03 lakh in 2022. This upward trend underscores the importance of ensuring a safe and secure environment for visitors.
