In a resolute declaration of gratitude and state responsibility, Assam Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal reaffirmed the government’s enduring commitment to the dignity and welfare of the Loktantra Senanis. These individuals had stood up to defend democracy during India’s Emergency period from 1975 to 1977.

Speaking at a public function in Guwahati, Singhal emphasized that the BJP-led government recognizes the sacrifices made by these democracy fighters and will continue to ensure their respect and welfare through concrete actions.

Recognizing the Fight for Democracy

Loktantra Senanis were individuals jailed or persecuted for resisting the Emergency declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Assam is among the states that officially recognize them with a special pension scheme, regular medical assistance, and other state-backed honors.

Ashok Singhal, who also holds the Health & Family Welfare and Irrigation portfolios, said, “We are committed to honoring our Loktantra Senanis with dignity and support. Their contribution to preserving democratic values cannot be forgotten. The Assam government salutes their courage.”

New Initiatives Underway

During the event, Singhal hinted at upcoming welfare initiatives designed to further assist these veterans of democracy. He noted that plans are in motion to expand the medical reimbursement scheme and consider increased monthly pensions for registered Loktantra Senanis.

“We are not just offering lip service. Policy frameworks are being strengthened to ensure real-time delivery of benefits,” Singhal stated.

He also added that the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) is in constant touch with the Welfare of Freedom Fighters department to resolve any procedural delays affecting eligible recipients.

Digital Monitoring and Outreach

To ensure seamless disbursal of benefits, the state is also exploring digital tools. A portal is being developed to maintain updated data on the health. Also, for needs of Loktantra Senanis, making grievance redressal faster and more efficient.

According to Singhal, this digital initiative will enable district officials to act promptly in addressing pension delays, healthcare requests, and logistical support.

Building Public Memory

Singhal also advocated for the inclusion of Loktantra Senanis’ stories in Assam’s public education and state museums.

“We must institutionalize their memory. These individuals are living examples of resilience. Our young generation should know who safeguarded our freedom in its darkest hours,” he said.

Plans are being proposed to document these experiences through interviews, audio-visual archives, and dedicated exhibits at the Assam State Museum in Guwahati.

Political and Civil Reactions

Leaders across party lines have welcomed Singhal’s remarks. A spokesperson from the All Assam Loktantra Senani Association praised the government for its ongoing support.

“We feel heard. For the first time in years, the government is actively working. In addition to, provide more than just symbolic recognition,” said senior Loktantra Senani, Dinesh Pathak, from Nagaon.

However, opposition leaders urged the government to ensure that the benefits actually reach the grassroots level, especially in rural areas.

Ashok Singhal ended his address by urging all departments and civil society organizations to treat Loktantra Senanis with the highest regard. He stressed that safeguarding the honor of these brave citizens is a shared responsibility.

“Democracy thrives not only in Parliament or Assembly halls but in the collective conscience of its people. These Senanis are its true sentinels,” he concluded.
