Assam’s Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh, established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe a high-profile case involving Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Colbourn, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. The case, registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and sections of the Indian Penal Code, centers on allegations of Colbourn’s connections with Sheikh and potential links to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
The controversy began when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Colbourn, a British citizen, of maintaining ties with Sheikh and the ISI. Sarma highlighted a 2015 meeting between Gaurav Gogoi and then-Pakistani High Commissioner to India, Abdul Basit, suggesting that this interaction, along with Colbourn’s alleged associations, could have national security implications. Sarma stated, “On February 16, the Assam Cabinet will deliberate on whether the recent revelations concerning an MP from Assam have any implications for national security.” He further suggested that foreign entities, possibly linked to George Soros’ Open Society, might have influenced significant decisions within the Assam Congress in 2014.
