Assam Skill University ex-servicemen partnership was formally announced on Thursday. The university signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate of Sainik Welfare, Assam, aiming to empower retired armed forces personnel through skill development and vocational training.
The initiative seeks to bridge the transition from military to civilian life by providing tailored courses that match current industry needs. The MoU was signed at a special event held in Guwahati, attended by state officials, defense representatives, and university leadership.

Training Veterans for Civilian Careers
With this partnership, the university will offer certified courses in areas such as logistics, electrical systems, healthcare support, cybersecurity, and project management. These programs are designed with inputs from industry experts and defense advisors to suit the unique skills ex-servicemen already possess.
Colonel B.B. Phukan (Retd), Director of Sainik Welfare, remarked, “Our veterans have discipline and dedication. Now, we’re giving them updated skills so they can thrive in new careers.” He emphasized the need for structured training to help ex-servicemen integrate into the civilian job market smoothly.
Courses Offered Through Industry-Aligned Curriculum
The first phase of the Assam Skill University ex-servicemen partnership will roll out ten short-term and long-term programs. These include welding, renewable energy systems, IT hardware repair, and advanced office management. Each course will combine theoretical instruction with hands-on experience.
Dr. Subhash Chandra Das, Vice Chancellor of Assam Skill University, stated, “Our curriculum matches global standards. We want veterans to compete confidently not just in Assam, but across India and abroad.”
Moreover, course modules will incorporate soft skills, workplace communication, and entrepreneurial training to prepare ex-servicemen for a variety of career paths.
On-Campus and Remote Learning Options
To ensure maximum participation, the university will provide both on-campus and remote learning options. Ex-servicemen located in remote parts of Assam will be able to access digital learning platforms developed by the university’s IT department.
Additionally, the university plans to set up mobile training centers in collaboration with district Sainik Welfare offices. These units will reach rural regions where many retired personnel reside.
By expanding access, the program hopes to train over 5,000 ex-servicemen within the next two years.
Placement Assistance and Industry Partnerships
One of the key benefits of the Assam Skill University ex-servicemen partnership is guaranteed placement support. The university has partnered with companies in sectors like manufacturing, logistics, hospitality, and IT services to place trained veterans in suitable roles.

Furthermore, the university is negotiating with national and international organizations to place skilled candidates in high-demand markets.

Besides technical training, the initiative will offer counseling and mentorship programs to support the emotional and mental well-being of veterans. Transitioning from a disciplined military environment to a corporate or service role can be overwhelming.
Recognizing this, the Sainik Welfare Directorate has involved experienced psychologists and peer mentors to assist in the adjustment process.

The initiative complements national policies under the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. By skilling veterans, the program aligns with India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and digital empowerment.
It also supports the larger mission of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to make higher education institutions more socially responsible.
Speaking at the event, Chief Secretary Paban Kumar Borthakur lauded the collaboration and urged other universities in the region to adopt similar initiatives.
