Assam’s Cultural Legacy: Rang Ghar Beautification Project and Sivasagar’s Development Initiatives

In a significant stride towards safeguarding Assam’s rich cultural heritage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the “Ban-Phi and Bhumipujan” program for the “Construction of the Historical Rang Ghar Beautification Project” at the Rang Ghar Beautification Project Area in Sivasagar. The event marked the beginning of a transformative journey to enhance and preserve Asia’s oldest surviving amphitheatre, the iconic Rang Ghar, which has stood for 280 years as a testament to Assam’s historical and cultural legacy.

Chief Minister Sarma, in his address, underscored the cultural significance of Rang Ghar and expressed his unwavering commitment to ensuring its preservation for another millennium. Seeking the blessings of ancestors, he heralded the commencement of the beautification works that are poised to breathe new life into this living monument.

The Chief Minister highlighted the instrumental role played by Swargadeo Rudra Singha in shaping Assamese sports, art, and culture through the creation of rangghars. With a vision for comprehensive development, he announced a substantial budget of Rs 140 crore for the Rang Ghar Beautification Project, setting a target for its completion by 2026.

Sivasagar, a city steeped in history, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation with Chief Minister Sarma’s comprehensive developmental updates. The conversion of Sivasagar College into a university is underway, promising expanded educational opportunities. The initiation of the construction of Sivasagar Medical College next month adds a crucial healthcare dimension to the city’s development.

In a move to enhance connectivity and infrastructure, a Rs 187 crore project to improve the road to Nazira at the Dikhoumukh ferry ghat is in the pipeline. This initiative aims to facilitate smoother transportation and contribute to the overall growth of the region.

Chief Minister Sarma’s forward-looking approach was further evident in the announcement to relocate the Sivasagar jail next year, emphasizing the government’s commitment to infrastructural development. The optimism he expressed about the positive transformation in Sivasagar reflects a broader vision for the region’s prosperity.

“The victory of development, karma yajna, has begun in Sivasagar,” proclaimed Chief Minister Sarma, encapsulating the essence of a holistic approach to cultural preservation, infrastructural development, and the overall upliftment of the historical city.
