Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed students and faculty at Gauhati University, emphasizing that Assam is firmly on the path to prosperity. Highlighting a series of developmental milestones, Dr. Sarma announced a massive financial grant of ₹250 crore for Gauhati University, aimed at enhancing infrastructure, research capabilities, and student welfare.

The Chief Minister’s visit marked a pivotal moment, as he outlined his government’s ambitious plans to transform Assam into an educational, economic, and cultural powerhouse in eastern India. “We are not just speaking about development in theory,” Dr. Sarma declared. “We are witnessing a real transformation across sectors — education, healthcare, industry, and rural development — and Assam will soon be one of the leading states of India.”

The ₹250 crore grant for Gauhati University, one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the Northeast, will be disbursed over the next three years. Dr. Sarma elaborated that the fund would be used to modernize classrooms, upgrade laboratories, construct new hostels, and establish world-class research centers. Special attention will also be given to fostering innovation, technology startups, and incubation hubs on campus.

“An institution like Gauhati University must not only lead Assam but also shine on the national and global stage,” said the Chief Minister. He further announced that the government will introduce a “University of Excellence” framework, offering special incentives for public universities that show outstanding academic and research achievements.

Dr. Sarma’s speech also reflected on Assam’s overall progress in recent years. He pointed to key initiatives such as infrastructure development through the Asom Mala road project, employment generation programs, healthcare expansion under Ayushman Asom, and investments in the agriculture and tourism sectors. According to the Chief Minister, these initiatives are gradually changing the socio-economic landscape of the state.

He particularly emphasized the role of the youth in this transformative journey. Addressing the students, he said, “The future of Assam lies in your hands. We can create policies and build infrastructures, but it is you who will carry the torch forward.” Dr. Sarma encouraged students to dream big, explore entrepreneurship, engage in research, and actively participate in Assam’s developmental mission.

In a touching moment, Dr. Sarma, an alumnus of Gauhati University himself, reminisced about his student days and acknowledged the role the institution had played in shaping his career. “This university gave me the foundation on which I built my life. Today, it is my privilege to give back to the university and its future generations,” he said.

Apart from the grant announcement, Dr. Sarma also unveiled plans for setting up a Center for Northeast Studies within the university, dedicated to research and documentation of the unique cultures, languages, and histories of the region. He stressed that preserving Assam’s cultural identity is just as crucial as driving its economic growth.

The Chief Minister concluded his address by reaffirming his government’s commitment to creating a “New Assam” — a state where tradition and modernity go hand in hand, and where prosperity reaches every household. “We will continue to work with dedication, determination, and discipline. Assam’s best days are ahead of us,” he said, drawing a thunderous applause from the packed auditorium.

The announcement of the ₹250 crore grant has been widely welcomed by the academic community. Students expressed excitement over the prospect of improved facilities, while professors lauded the government’s commitment to higher education. Many noted that the move would help the university attract more talented students and faculty, and boost Assam’s reputation as a center of learning.

As Assam strides forward with confidence under Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, events like this reaffirm a shared belief: that through education, innovation, and inclusive development, the state is indeed building a brighter tomorrow.
