Alleged Assault Triggers Protest
According to local sources, unidentified individuals attacked the crew of a passenger bus on the Khowai–Kamalpur road. The incident reportedly involved the driver and his assistant, although details about the attackers remain unclear.
Following the incident, sections of transport operators halted bus services in protest. The suspension began on Monday morning and affected routes linking Khowai with Agartala, Kamalpur and Kailashahar.
The sudden halt in services reportedly occurred without prior notice, which caused inconvenience to many passengers.
Passengers Left Stranded
The suspension of bus services left several commuters stranded at different locations. Many passengers waiting at bus stands were forced to look for alternative modes of transport to reach their destinations.
Autorickshaws and some private vehicles continued to operate on certain stretches of the affected routes. However, commuters alleged that drivers increased fares significantly during the disruption.
Passengers claimed that the cost of a one-way journey rose to between Rs 200 and Rs 300 per person. Under normal circumstances, fares on these routes are considerably lower.
Commuters Forced to Pay Higher Fares
Several travellers said they had little choice but to pay the higher fares due to urgent travel requirements. Students, office workers and patients travelling for medical purposes were among those affected by the sudden suspension.
Commuters also expressed concern about the lack of prior information regarding the service halt, which made it difficult for them to plan alternative travel arrangements.
Police Launch Investigation
Meanwhile, police officials confirmed that they have started an investigation into the alleged assault on the bus crew. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and attempting to identify those involved.
Officials stated that appropriate action would follow once the investigation is completed. Police also assured that they will take necessary steps to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of transport workers.
The incident has drawn attention to safety concerns for transport staff operating on regional routes in Tripura. Authorities expect normal bus services to resume once the situation stabilises and the concerns of transport operators are addressed.
