With Durga Puja fast approaching, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has directed officials to take urgent steps to reduce traffic congestion in the capital city. Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Civil Secretariat on Saturday, the Chief Minister called for the introduction of hydraulic parking systems at key points in Agartala as part of a modern traffic management strategy.

Dr. Saha highlighted that a smooth traffic system is essential for citizens and visitors during the festive season. He instructed officials to work with greater accountability to ensure hassle-free movement across the city before the celebrations begin.

Strict Action Against Traffic Violations

The Chief Minister issued firm instructions to curb practices that worsen traffic conditions. These include loading and unloading of goods during peak hours, long-term roadside parking, and obstruction in narrow lanes. He said such activities create unnecessary blockages and must be strictly regulated.

At the same time, Dr. Saha stressed that traffic police should engage politely with citizens. “Many issues can be solved through cooperation and better communication. Police should explain rules to the public in a respectful manner,” he said.

Smart City and Infrastructure Review

During the meeting, the Chief Minister also reviewed progress under the Agartala Smart City Project. This included updates on the construction of concrete roadside drains and proposals for building double-lane flyovers to ease congestion in busy areas.

Dr. Saha directed departments to ensure that ongoing development projects do not cause inconvenience to the public, especially during Durga Puja when footfall and traffic in Agartala rise significantly. “People should not face trouble due to construction works at such an important time,” he noted.

Inputs from Officials

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Kanta Jangir briefed the Chief Minister on the current traffic situation in Agartala. Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha stressed the importance of proper planning for both traffic management and infrastructure projects to create long-term solutions.

The review meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Director General of Police Anurag, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, PWD and Power Secretary Abhishek Singh, Tourism Secretary U. K. Chakma, CEO of Agartala Smart City Ltd. Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, AMC CEO Dilip Kumar Chakma, PWD Chief Engineer Rajib Debbarma, along with senior officers from the police and other departments.

Looking Ahead

The introduction of hydraulic parking systems, stricter enforcement against traffic violations, and better planning under the Smart City initiative are expected to significantly improve Agartala’s traffic flow. With the festive season around the corner, the government’s priority is to ensure smooth mobility and convenience for citizens.

If implemented effectively, these measures could not only provide relief during Durga Puja but also lay the foundation for a more efficient urban traffic management system in the capital city.
