The Northeast, the Congress revamps Assam unit, ushering in new leadership and organizational reforms. The Indian National Congress on Sunday, July 6, announced a major reshuffle in the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

The changes, approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, include the formation of a new Political Affairs Committee, appointment of several new office bearers, and designation of district presidents across the state.

A Strategic Reshuffle Ahead of Elections

Political analysts view the revamp as a calculated step by the Congress to consolidate its position in Assam ahead of crucial elections.

The Congress revamps Assam unit at a time when regional parties like the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been expanding their influence in the state.

“The Congress leadership understands that organizational restructuring is essential to reclaim lost ground,” said political commentator Dr. Hiren Kalita, speaking to The Hindu.

New Political Affairs Committee

A key highlight of the reshuffle is the constitution of the APCC Political Affairs Committee. This panel will advise the state leadership on crucial political decisions, coordinate grassroots activities, and chart the party’s electoral strategies.

Sources within the APCC revealed that the committee will include senior leaders from diverse ethnic and linguistic backgrounds, reflecting Assam’s unique demographic landscape.

Key Office Bearers Announced

Alongside the Political Affairs Committee, new appointments were announced to vital posts in the state unit.

Prominent among them is the elevation of youth leader Ananya Das as the new General Secretary (Organisation). Das has previously worked extensively in mobilizing young voters and is expected to bring fresh energy into the APCC’s functioning.

Other notable appointments include:

  • Bhaskar Sharma as Treasurer
  • Ranjita Bora as Vice-President
  • Abdul Rehman as Minority Cell Chairman
  • Pranjal Saikia as Media Cell Chief

The changes aim to ensure better coordination between the state unit and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Delhi.

District Presidents for Grassroots Strength

To reinforce its grassroots presence, the Congress has appointed new district presidents for various districts including Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Barpeta, and Cachar.

“This move is critical because district-level leadership often serves as the backbone for state-level campaigns,” said a senior APCC leader who wished to remain unnamed.

Gaurav Gogoi Welcomes Restructuring

Gaurav Gogoi, APCC President and Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, expressed optimism about the changes.

“With these appointments, we are better prepared to fight for the rights of the people of Assam. Our mission is to protect Assam’s identity, economy, and culture,” Gogoi said while addressing a press conference in Guwahati.

He also reiterated the party’s commitment to challenging the BJP on issues like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), price rise, and unemployment.

A Renewed Focus on Ethnic Unity

Observers say the Congress revamps Assam unit partly in response to rising ethnic tensions and identity politics in Assam. The inclusion of diverse leaders in key positions is intended to present the Congress as an inclusive force.

“The Congress is trying to revive its image as a party that represents all communities,” said Dr. Kalita.

Call for Support and Mobilization

Party leaders urged supporters and workers to rally behind the new leadership.

“The time for internal divisions is over. We must unite to defeat communal forces and protect Assam’s future,” said Gaurav Gogoi.

Looking Ahead

As the Congress revamps Assam unit, the coming months will test the effectiveness of these organizational changes. The BJP remains a formidable rival, but the Congress hopes that its renewed focus on grassroots connection and inclusive leadership will help regain lost momentum.
