The Tripura Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPIM) has revealed its candidate lineup for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for September 5 in the Boxanagar and Dhanpur Assembly Constituencies, situated within Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

During a press conference, Narayan Kar, the Convener of Tripura Left Front, disclosed that Mijan Hossain, son of the late MLA Samsul Haque, will stand as the contender for Boxanagar. Meanwhile, in the Dhanpur Assembly constituency, the candidate will be Kaushik Chanda, who previously contested from the same seat during the 2023 Assembly Election against Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik.

Kar also shared that both candidates are poised to submit their nomination papers on August 16.

Speaking about the current political climate, Kar remarked, “At this critical juncture, when the government’s actions are challenging the foundations of the Indian Constitution, democracy itself is under threat.” He expressed concerns about the growing sense of peril and apprehension among citizens, as the nation appears to be veering towards autocracy. Kar emphasized that the 2023 Assembly election witnessed various strategies employed by the ruling party to suppress the voices of both the common people and opposition parties, while the administration remained passive observers.

Alleging that the ruling party has adopted fascistic tactics, Kar highlighted the challenges faced by CPIM in both constituencies, with restrictions preventing them from engaging in political activities.

“In such circumstances, we have decided to contest against them,” he stated. Kar called upon all opposition parties to unite against the ruling BJP and requested the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure a fair and free election.

As political tensions rise, the upcoming by-elections in Tripura are poised to become a critical point in the ongoing narrative of democracy and representation.
