Marking a major shift toward sustainable transport, electric buses in Arunachal were launched across five towns on World Environment Day 2025. The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to green mobility and cleaner air.
The state government flagged off electric buses in Itanagar, Naharlagun, Pasighat, Roing, and Bomdila on June 5. This marks Arunachal as the first northeastern state to introduce electric buses across multiple towns simultaneously.

Electric Buses in Arunachal Lead Green Mobility Push
This move is part of the broader National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP). Backed by both state and central funds, the project aims to reduce air pollution and modernize public transport systems.
Each electric bus in Arunachal features zero-emission technology, GPS tracking, air-conditioned interiors, and low floors for accessibility. The first fleet includes 25 buses, five in each selected town. More will be added in the coming months.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the initiative is more than a transportation upgrade. He called it a “lifestyle shift” toward a sustainable future.
How Key Towns Benefit from Electric Buses in Arunachal
Itanagar and Naharlagun
As administrative hubs, Itanagar and Naharlagun face high traffic volumes. The electric buses here are set to reduce air pollution and ease commuting. Routes connect major hospitals, schools, and offices.
Pasighat
In East Siang district, Pasighat is fast-growing. Students and patients often travel across town, and the new buses aim to improve daily connectivity while reducing emissions.
Roing
Roing, a commercial town, struggles with congestion. The electric buses will ease traffic and promote eco-tourism by offering cleaner transport options.
Bomdila
High up in the Himalayas, Bomdila is ecologically sensitive. The launch of electric buses in Arunachal here is expected to lower emissions and protect the mountain environment.
Electric Buses in Arunachal Support Climate Goals
This launch supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). By introducing electric buses in Arunachal, the government expects to cut 1,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
To power these buses, the government is setting up solar charging stations. The first is now running in Itanagar. Others in the remaining towns will be ready by August 2025.
What’s Next for Green Transport in Arunachal?
The state plans to expand electric bus services to Tawang, Ziro, and Tezu in 2026. A mobile app is also in development. It will help users check routes, track buses in real-time, and offer feedback.
In addition, awareness drives are underway. Local schools and colleges are taking part in “Green Commute Days” to promote the use of electric buses. These efforts aim to build a long-term habit of eco-friendly travel.
Citizens and Experts Welcome the Change
Local reactions to the new buses have been mostly positive. “They’re quiet, clean, and on time. It’s a welcome change,” said Rina Tayeng, a college student in Naharlagun.
Experts have praised the decision as forward-thinking. Dr. Sonam Dolma, an environmentalist from NEHU, said, “Introducing electric buses in Arunachal is a big step, especially in such a biologically diverse region.”
The launch of electric buses in Arunachal on World Environment Day 2025 signals a strong step toward green mobility. With cleaner transport, reduced emissions, and community participation, Arunachal is shaping up to be a model for sustainable public transit in the Northeast. More towns will soon join the green ride.
