On December 17, 2024, the 58 GTC, under the auspices of Headquarters 101 Area, organized a major Ex-Servicemen Rally at Happy Valley, Shillong. The event brought together over 300 ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, war widows, and their families from across Meghalaya, aimed at strengthening the bond between the Indian Army, veterans, their dependents, and the broader community. The rally served as a vital platform to address the welfare and support needs of these individuals who have made major contributions to the nation.

Key Highlights of the Ex-Servicemen Rally in Shillong

The rally was graced by several prominent dignitaries, including Governor of Meghalaya, C H Vijayashankar, Lt Gen Sanjay Malik, the General Officer Commanding of 101 Area, and Air Marshal IS Walia, AVSM, VM, Senior Air Staff Officer of the Eastern Air Command. These dignitaries interacted personally with the Veer Naris, Ex-Servicemen, and their families, offering unwavering support for the welfare of veterans and their dependents.

Governor Vijayashankar highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to ensure quality healthcare for Veer Naris and veterans. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing any challenges faced by these individuals, underscoring the state’s dedication to improving the well-being of its ex-servicemen and their families.

Financial Assistance and Felicitation

During the rally, financial assistance of ₹20,000 was provided to Silia Mary Kharbudnah, a widow of an ex-serviceman. Additionally, sixty Veer Naris, Ex-Servicemen, and war widows were felicitated in recognition of their remarkable service to the nation. This gesture was a testament to the Indian Army’s continued gratitude for their sacrifices.

Support Services and Welfare Stalls

A major feature of the rally was the set-up of various welfare stalls, offering essential services for veterans and their families. These included stalls dedicated to pension assistance, documentation support, welfare schemes, medical benefits, banking services, and CSD (Canteen Stores Department) items. The Rajya Sainik Board, Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, Record Offices, and banks such as State Bank of India and ICICI Bank had representatives at the stalls to provide immediate assistance.

These stalls allowed veterans and their families to engage directly with military authorities and civil authorities, resolving any outstanding concerns related to their pension, medical benefits, and other welfare schemes. The presence of banking representatives also ensured that financial services were easily accessible to all attendees.

State Government Initiatives

In addition to the military support services, the Meghalaya state government set up stalls to showcase its CM Elevate and Prime initiatives. These schemes aim to support the economic empowerment and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families, providing them with the necessary tools and opportunities to lead fulfilling lives post-service.
