Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during an election rally held at Kalgachiya in Barpeta district on May 3. Gogoi accused the BJP-led government of neglecting core public issues, particularly the welfare of children and the integrity of the electoral process, while engaging in what he described as diversionary tactics and personal attacks on political opponents.
Speaking to a large gathering of supporters, Gogoi questioned the government’s commitment to improving children’s health and education in rural Assam. He alleged that Sarma’s administration has failed to implement essential child welfare schemes effectively, leaving many families in backward regions struggling without basic services. According to him, this neglect highlights a growing disconnect between the government’s rhetoric and the ground realities experienced by the public.
Gogoi also raised concerns about discrepancies in the voter list ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. He claimed that several names have been unfairly removed from the rolls, leading to widespread anxiety among citizens about their right to vote. He demanded an immediate review of the process by the Election Commission and urged the people to remain vigilant against any attempts to manipulate the democratic process.
The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP has consistently diverted attention from key developmental issues by resorting to political mudslinging. He emphasized that such tactics aim to deflect public scrutiny from the failures of the current administration. Gogoi urged voters to reject what he called the BJP’s “politics of distraction” and instead focus on electing leaders who prioritize people’s needs.
Highlighting the critical condition of government schools and primary health centers, Gogoi asked why the state government has not taken decisive steps to upgrade public infrastructure. He argued that Sarma has chosen to chase headlines with controversial remarks rather than invest time in resolving real issues affecting children and families.
The Congress MP said that during his visits across Assam, he encountered many parents who expressed fear about their children’s futures due to the government’s poor handling of school funding and nutrition programs. He stated that these voices must be heard, and their concerns addressed, especially at a time when the state has the opportunity to build on its young population.
Gogoi did not mince words when addressing the BJP’s approach to governance. He described it as superficial and driven by self-interest. He accused the Chief Minister of being more interested in political grandstanding than in delivering results that benefit the masses.
During the rally, Gogoi called upon youth and first-time voters to come forward and support a vision of inclusive governance. He urged them to think critically about the current leadership and to demand accountability from those in power. He noted that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections serve as a pivotal moment for Assam’s future and that every vote must reflect a desire for real change.
Gogoi’s remarks are expected to heighten tensions in the ongoing political campaign, especially as Barpeta remains a high-stakes seat for both Congress and BJP. His statements targeting the Chief Minister indicate a sharpened Congress strategy focused on public service failures rather than only ideological confrontation.
As political momentum builds in Assam ahead of the elections, Gogoi’s critiques may find traction among communities who feel neglected or marginalized under the current administration. Whether these allegations will influence voter sentiment remains to be seen, but the Congress leader has clearly signaled that he plans to center his campaign around accountability, transparency, and public welfare.
