The event took place at his memorial in Guwahati, where Sarma reflected on Bordoloi’s contributions to the state’s political and cultural identity.

Sarma offered floral tributes at the samadhi of Bordoloi, expressing admiration for his dedication to national unity and democratic values. The Chief Minister was accompanied by senior cabinet ministers, BJP leaders, and top government officials.

Remembering the Legacy of Assam’s First CM

In his speech, Himanta paid tribute to Gopinath Bordoloi as a guiding light in Assam’s post-independence journey. He noted that Bordoloi’s decisions during a crucial phase of India’s history helped preserve Assam’s integrity within the Indian Union.

Sarma emphasized that without Bordoloi’s determined stand against the Cabinet Mission’s proposal in 1946, Assam might have become part of East Pakistan. According to him, “We owe a debt of gratitude to Bordoloi for safeguarding Assam’s geographical and cultural identity.”

Bordoloi was not only a freedom fighter but also a visionary administrator. His policies laid the groundwork for modern Assam, including development in education, land reforms, and protection of indigenous rights.

Events Across Assam to Mark the Day

Various cultural and educational institutions across Assam organized programmes to honour the former Chief Minister. In many schools, students presented skits and speeches about his life, reinforcing his values among the younger generation.

“Today, as we navigate challenges of identity, security, and development, we must remember how Bordoloi tackled similar issues with wisdom and resolve,” Sarma said. He further added that education, unity, and commitment to one’s roots are key takeaways from the leader’s life.

The CM also announced that the state government plans to integrate more detailed chapters on Bordoloi’s legacy in the high school curriculum to foster awareness.

State Government to Preserve Bordoloi’s Legacy

To commemorate the milestone year, Himanta revealed that the Assam government will undertake fresh initiatives to preserve sites associated with Bordoloi’s life. These include restoration work at his ancestral house and digitization of his written works.

He also proposed a new academic fellowship in the name of Gopinath Bordoloi. This will support students researching the freedom movement and Northeast India’s political integration.

In addition, the government will establish a dedicated chair on Bordoloi studies at Gauhati University, aimed at encouraging in-depth academic work.
