The Guwahati Traffic Police has announced a detailed traffic management plan ahead of the Chhath Puja celebrations scheduled for October 27 and 28. The city is expected to witness large gatherings near river ghats and water bodies. Leading authorities to implement restrictions and diversions to maintain smooth vehicular flow and ensure public safety.
The restrictions will come into effect from 11:00 AM on October 27 and remain until 11:00 AM on October 28, covering key routes across the city. Officials have urged commuters to cooperate and follow the guidelines to avoid congestion during the two-day celebration.
The decision comes as thousands of devotees prepare to perform rituals along the Brahmaputra River and other water bodies. Marking one of the most important festivals for the Bhojpuri and Maithili communities residing in Assam’s capital.
Special Arrangements for Devotees
According to the Guwahati Traffic Police, special arrangements are being made near major Chhath Puja ghats. Including Kachari Ghat, Bharalumukh Ghat, Pandu Ghat, and Noonmati Ghat. Additional personnel will be deployed to manage both vehicle and pedestrian movement during the peak hours of offering prayers at sunrise and sunset.
The administration has coordinated with local puja committees to ensure smooth access to ghats while maintaining security protocols. Barricades and signboards will be placed along the main routes to guide traffic and prevent unnecessary parking or crowding near worship sites.
To assist citizens, police control rooms and help desks will operate round-the-clock near major ghats. Volunteers from local organizations will also assist in crowd management and provide emergency support.
Key Traffic Restrictions and Diversions
In the official notice, the Guwahati Traffic Police stated that certain roads will remain closed to private vehicles during the Chhath Puja period. Entry to Kachari–MG Road, Pandu Adabari stretch, and Noonmati–Chandmari road will be regulated to ensure a free flow of devotees towards the riverbanks.
Vehicles heading towards Fancy Bazar and Bharalumukh will be diverted via AT Road, while heavy vehicles will be completely restricted in the central parts of the city. The movement of commercial trucks, buses, and construction vehicles will be suspended in sensitive zones. From Sunday morning to Monday noon.
Public transport operators have been advised to use alternate routes such as GS Road, Bhangagarh, and Maligaon bypass, while emergency and essential service vehicles will be granted special passage.
Officials also appealed to citizens to use public transport whenever possible to minimize congestion in high-traffic zones.
Appeal for Public Cooperation
Guwahati Police Commissionerate has urged residents to plan their travel in advance and avoid routes near the riverbanks. A public advisory was issued through social media platforms. And local television channels to spread awareness about the temporary restrictions.
An official from the Traffic Department said, “We expect a large turnout for Chhath Puja this year. Our priority is to ensure that devotees can perform rituals peacefully and that emergency movement remains unhindered.”
Citizens have been requested to follow parking instructions, avoid unnecessary honking. And refrain from parking near ghat entry points. Violators may face towing of vehicles and penalties under traffic laws.
Coordination Between Departments
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Water Resources Department, and District Administration are working in coordination with the police to manage the festival smoothly. Efforts are being made to clean and illuminate major ghats to ensure safety during the evening prayers.
The Health Department has set up first aid booths at popular ghats, and fire and rescue teams will remain stationed at strategic locations along the Brahmaputra River. The Assam State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) will be on high alert. To tackle any emergency during the celebrations.
Additionally, the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) has been directed to ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout the festive period.
Significance of Chhath Puja in Assam
Chhath Puja, though traditionally celebrated in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, has gained immense popularity in Assam. Particularly in Guwahati, where a significant number of migrant families reside. The festival honors the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, symbolizing gratitude for life, prosperity, and nature’s blessings.
Over the years, Chhath Puja in Guwahati has transformed into a vibrant community event, reflecting the cultural harmony of the state. Devotees observe a four-day ritual that includes fasting, bathing in holy rivers, and offering prayers during sunrise and sunset.
With growing participation each year, authorities have recognized the need for stricter crowd management and better infrastructure near ghats.
Public Urged to Follow Safety Norms
The Guwahati Traffic Police has emphasized the importance of following safety protocols during the festival. Devotees are encouraged to use designated parking spaces. Follow signage, and avoid overcrowded areas.
The department has also requested people to maintain cleanliness at the ghats. And dispose of offerings responsibly to prevent water pollution in the Brahmaputra and other rivers.
Authorities assured that traffic personnel would be deployed in full strength to assist citizens, manage crowds, and respond to any emergencies during the two-day celebration.
