Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, May 20, alleged that the Congress-led Opposition suffered politically in the Assam Assembly elections after attempting to “politicise” the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The Chief Minister made the statement during his visit to ‘Zubeen Khetra’, the memorial and cremation site of the late musician at Kamarakuchi in Sonapur, located on the outskirts of Guwahati.
During the visit, Sarma paid tribute to the iconic Assamese artist and also reviewed the ongoing development work at the memorial site. Moreover, he emphasized that the people of Assam did not support attempts to use emotional issues for political gain.

Speaking to the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the Opposition miscalculated public sentiment by allegedly turning Zubeen Garg’s death into a political issue. According to the Chief Minister, voters in Assam responded negatively to such narratives during the elections.
Furthermore, Sarma stated that the people of Assam deeply respected Zubeen Garg not only as a singer but also as a cultural icon. Therefore, he argued that any attempt to politicise his passing was viewed unfavorably by the public.
