Guwahati, November 12: The Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) has officially begins gas supply to Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) through the Guwahati-Numaligarh Pipeline (GNPL) section starting November 11, 2025. This marks a crucial step in connecting Northeast India to the national gas grid and advancing the region’s clean energy goals.
The event marks a new chapter in India’s “One Nation, One Gas Grid” initiative, bringing sustainable and affordable fuel to Assam’s industrial corridor.
IGGL Begins Gas Supply to NRL: A Boost for Northeast’s Energy Network
The launch of IGGL’s gas supply to NRL demonstrates the success of the North East Gas Grid Project. The project is led by IGGL, a joint venture of GAIL (India) Limited, Oil India Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Numaligarh Refinery Limited, and ONGC.
The Guwahati-Numaligarh Pipeline (GNPL) connects NRL’s refining complex with the state’s main gas infrastructure. It ensures reliable access to natural gas for industrial use, reducing dependence on conventional fuels.
Officials confirmed that this gas flow will help NRL meet its energy needs more efficiently while cutting operational emissions.
A Cleaner Fuel Path for Numaligarh Refinery
With the IGGL gas supply to NRL now operational, the refinery gains direct access to a cleaner energy source. Natural gas will replace liquid fuels in several key operations, improving both environmental performance and cost-effectiveness.
NRL officials said the move aligns with India’s commitment to raising the share of natural gas in its energy mix from 6% to 15% by 2030. It will also support local industries by ensuring stable fuel supply for expansion and new projects.
This step is expected to help Golaghat district evolve into an industrial hub powered by clean energy.
Guwahati-Numaligarh Pipeline: Engineering for a Sustainable Future
The GNPL section, built under challenging terrain, is part of the 1,656-km North East Gas Grid. It will eventually connect all eight northeastern states to India’s main gas infrastructure.
This connection shows IGGL’s engineering excellence and commitment to sustainable growth. The company ensured environmental safeguards and efficient pipeline monitoring systems during construction.
“The Guwahati-Numaligarh link will power industries, reduce pollution, and bring new investments to the region,” said an IGGL spokesperson.
Economic Impact: Fueling Growth Across the Northeast
The operationalization of the IGGL-NRL gas supply is a major step in Northeast India’s industrial expansion. It supports manufacturing, fertilizers, power generation, and city gas networks.
This development will create more opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). With cleaner energy, industries can operate more sustainably, attracting national and international investors.
Moreover, the project strengthens Assam’s role as a key energy hub for India’s eastern corridor.
IGGL’s Broader Mission for Northeast Connectivity
Established in 2018, Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) aims to deliver natural gas across the Northeast. It is jointly promoted by India’s leading public-sector energy companies: GAIL, IOCL, OIL, ONGC, and NRL.
IGGL’s total investment in the North East Gas Grid exceeds ₹9,000 crore. Once fully complete, it will extend gas pipelines to Agartala, Imphal, Aizawl, Kohima, Shillong, Itanagar, and Gangtok.
This will enable city gas distribution (CGD) networks, helping households and businesses shift from coal and diesel to natural gas. The initiative reflects India’s dedication to green growth and inclusive regional development.
Clean Energy Transition in Action
The IGGL gas supply to NRL highlights India’s steady move toward a low-carbon economy. With this connection, Northeast India will benefit from reduced greenhouse gas emissions, better air quality, and new job opportunities in the clean energy sector.
Energy experts predict that similar connections across the region will accelerate India’s transition toward sustainable energy systems.
IGGL’s Step Toward a Greener Northeast
The IGGL begins gas supply to NRL milestone marks a defining moment in India’s energy transformation. The Guwahati-Numaligarh Pipeline will empower industries, enhance energy access, and foster cleaner growth in the Northeast.
As IGGL expands its network further, the region is set to become a model for sustainable energy connectivity and industrial progress.
