Tripura Police have uncovered a significant case of illegal entry in Tripura, arresting eight people over the last 24 hours. Among those held are five Bangladeshi nationals and three Indian touts, suspected of facilitating cross-border infiltration.

The arrests took place during separate operations in Agartala and Amtali under West Tripura district. This marks a crucial step in tightening security along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Details of the Police Operations

Superintendent of Police (West Tripura) Kanta Jangir confirmed the arrests during a press briefing on Friday. Police conducted raids following intelligence inputs about suspicious movements near border areas and transit points.

“Increased vigilance and local intelligence led to these arrests. Preventing illegal entry in Tripura is a priority for us,” Jangir stated.

The arrested Bangladeshis allegedly crossed into Indian territory through unfenced sections of the border. Meanwhile, the Indian touts reportedly guided them through forested routes and urban corridors to avoid detection.

Routes Used for Illegal Entry in Tripura

Police sources revealed that the accused used remote stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border near Sonamura and Boxanagar in Sepahijala district. These areas are notorious for illegal crossings due to riverine and forest cover.

The detainees were later traced to Agartala and Amtali, where they planned to travel further into mainland India.

Identity and Backgrounds of Arrested Persons

While authorities have not released all names pending further verification, initial investigations indicate the Bangladeshi nationals hail from Comilla and Brahmanbaria districts.

The Indian touts belong to different parts of West Tripura and have alleged prior involvement in cross-border smuggling and human trafficking.

Police are probing whether this group is linked to a larger network operating across North-East India.

Rise in Illegal Entry Cases in Tripura

This incident highlights the persistent issue of illegal entry in Tripura, given its long and porous 856 km border with Bangladesh.

Earlier this year, Tripura Police reported over 350 cases of illegal infiltration. Many involved Bangladeshi nationals seeking work in India or attempting to travel further west.

Tripura shares significant international boundaries and remains under constant surveillance by the Border Security Force (BSF). However, challenging terrain often hampers total prevention of cross-border activities.

All eight accused have been charged under the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950. Police are also investigating possible charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to human trafficking.

They have been remanded to police custody for further questioning.

Legal experts indicate that individuals found guilty of facilitating illegal entry face imprisonment, heavy fines, and a permanent ban on travel-related occupations.

Government’s Response to Illegal Entry in Tripura

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, speaking at a separate event, reiterated the government’s tough stance against illegal infiltration.

“No compromise will be made. Our agencies are committed to stopping illegal entry in Tripura,” he said.

The government has also urged citizens to report suspicious movements near the border.

Regional Impact and National Security

Security analysts warn that illegal infiltration may pose national security risks beyond mere migration. Infiltrators can sometimes be used as conduits for smuggling, espionage, or extremist activities.

Organizations like the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) emphasize strengthening infrastructure, deploying technology like drones, and fostering local community vigilance to curb such incidents.

Call for Public Cooperation

Tripura Police have appealed to residents to remain alert and inform authorities about unknown individuals or suspicious movements. This, officials stress, is vital to curb illegal activities along the border.
