Artificial intelligence is changing how technology professionals build their careers. In India, the shift is now drawing experienced tech workers back into formal education.
A collaboration between IIT Kharagpur and upGrad has reported a sharp rise in enrolments in executive AI programmes. Enrolments have increased threefold quarter-on-quarter since the programmes were introduced.
The learners are not mainly fresh graduates or early-career professionals. Their median work experience stands at 12 years. Nearly 63 percent have more than a decade of professional experience.
The trend shows how AI skills are becoming relevant even for professionals who have already spent years building careers in technology.

AI Drives Demand for Advanced Skills
The growing use of AI across businesses is changing the skills expected from technology workers.
Professionals who once focused on software development, data analysis or technology management are now exploring areas such as generative AI, machine learning and AI-native software engineering.
The IIT Kharagpur-upGrad programmes have attracted professionals from 133 Indian cities. Learners have also joined from the UAE, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Australia and Kuwait.
The geographical spread shows that the demand for structured AI education extends beyond India’s major technology centres.
Executive AI Portfolio Expands
The collaboration initially offered four executive programmes. The portfolio has now expanded to seven programmes following the rise in enrolments.
The initial programmes focused on Generative AI, AI-Native Software Engineering, Applied AI and Machine Learning, and Technology and AI Leadership.
The three additional programmes focus on Building AI Products, Systems & Services, Applied Data Science & Agentic AI, and FinTech & AI.
The expansion reflects growing demand for courses that connect AI with specific professional roles.
Instead of learning AI only at a basic level, experienced workers are seeking programmes that can help them apply the technology to their existing responsibilities.
Senior Professionals Make Up a Large Share
The profile of the learners is one of the most notable features of the programme.
Participants include vice presidents, principal engineers, engineering managers, technology leads, staff software engineers, senior consultants and data scientists.
They also come from major companies across technology, banking, consulting and financial services. The institutions said learners include professionals from companies such as TCS, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, HSBC, Infosys, Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini, IBM, Oracle, Cognizant, Salesforce, Wipro, Citi and Qualcomm.
Technology services, consulting and financial services together account for nearly half of the learner base.
The participation of senior professionals highlights the changing nature of AI education. Workers with years of industry experience are seeking new technical knowledge without leaving their existing careers.
Generative AI and Machine Learning See Strong Interest
Some programmes have recorded particularly strong enrolment growth.
The Executive Post Graduate Certificate in Generative AI and Agentic AI recorded a twofold quarter-on-quarter increase. The Executive Post Graduate Certificate in Applied AI and Machine Learning saw similar growth.
The programmes cover technologies that are increasingly used in modern software and business environments.
IIT Kharagpur’s Applied AI and Machine Learning programme includes machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, transformers, generative AI, agentic AI, retrieval-augmented generation and deployment practices.
This approach gives experienced professionals a path to study advanced technologies while connecting them with practical applications.
Learning Goes Beyond Coding
AI education is also expanding beyond traditional programming skills.
Technology leaders often need to understand how AI systems affect business decisions, product development and organisational strategy.
IIT Kharagpur’s Technology and AI Leadership programme, for example, focuses on AI evaluation, technology governance, risk management and digital transformation. It is designed for professionals who lead technology decisions rather than simply build software.
This reflects a broader change in the technology sector.
AI is becoming relevant to managers and business leaders as well as engineers and data scientists.
Bengaluru Leads the Demand
Bengaluru has emerged as the largest source of learners in the programme. Hyderabad and Pune follow.
Professionals from Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Kolkata and Chennai have also joined. Learners are also coming from smaller Indian cities.
The spread indicates that AI upskilling is not limited to one technology cluster.
As companies across different sectors adopt AI tools, professionals in multiple locations are seeking specialised training.
AI Creates a Need for Continuous Learning
IIT Kharagpur Director Professor Suman Chakraborty has linked the rise of AI with the growing importance of continuous learning.
The institute has said artificial intelligence is transforming industries, institutions and society. It views lifelong learning as an increasingly important part of higher education.
For professionals, this means that years of experience may no longer be enough to remain aligned with changing technology.
Instead, experienced workers may need to add new skills while continuing to use their existing industry knowledge.
More Than 95 Percent Have Started Their Courses
The response has also translated into active participation.
According to IIT Kharagpur and upGrad, more than 95 percent of enrolled learners have activated their accounts and started their programmes. Completion and certification figures are not yet available because the earliest batches are still progressing through their courses.
This distinction is important. Enrolment figures show demand for the programmes, but they do not yet measure how many participants will complete them or apply the skills at work.
The programmes are still relatively new, with the partnership announced in April 2026.
AI Upskilling Becomes a Career Strategy
The rise in executive AI education reflects a wider change in India’s technology workforce.
Professionals with more than a decade of experience are returning to structured learning. They are studying AI while continuing to build on their existing careers.
The trend also shows that AI skills are becoming relevant across different levels of an organisation. Engineers, managers, consultants and senior technology leaders are all exploring specialised programmes.
IIT Kharagpur and upGrad’s expansion from four to seven programmes provides one example of this changing demand.
As artificial intelligence becomes more deeply integrated into software, finance, consulting and other industries, professional education is also adapting. For India’s experienced technology workforce, going back to class is becoming one way to keep pace with that transformation.
