On June 4, 2025, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Joynagar Women Child Care Centre, a vital healthcare facility designed to improve maternal and child health services in Lower Assam. This 100-bed hospital marks a milestone under the Assam Health Infrastructure Mission (AHIM).

Joynagar Women Care Centre Expands Healthcare Access in Assam

“This centre reflects our government’s resolve to provide quality healthcare for every woman and child,” said Dr. Sarma during the event. The Joynagar facility is the first of ten specialized women and child care centres planned across the state, including new units in Silchar, Barpeta, and Dibrugarh.

What Joynagar Women Care Centre Offers to Women and Children in Assam

Modern Healthcare Infrastructure

Located in Joynagar, the centre is equipped to serve thousands with:

  • A fully functional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric ICU
  • A 24/7 emergency maternity wing
  • Pre- and postnatal counseling rooms
  • Dedicated lactation and nutrition support services

These services are intended to reduce maternal and infant mortality, especially in underserved rural areas.

Skilled Medical Teams on Site

Unlike older rural facilities, Joynagar Centre houses full-time pediatricians, gynecologists, neonatal care nurses, and emergency staff. As part of AHIM’s long-term vision, continuous training programs will keep the workforce updated with best practices.

Bridging the Gap in Rural Maternal Healthcare

For years, women in Joynagar and surrounding villages had to travel over 100 kilometers to Guwahati for specialized care. Now, with the centre operational, timely treatment is within reach. Local resident Seema Devi shared, “I no longer need to travel far for check-ups. This centre gives my family peace of mind.”

Additionally, the facility will act as a referral hub for nearby primary health centres, streamlining emergency care and ensuring faster responses.

Strengthening Assam’s Healthcare System

A Key Part of ‘Health for All by 2030’

Joynagar Women Child Care Centre contributes directly to the state’s broader “Health for All by 2030” mission. The National Health Mission (NHM) Assam reports that maternal mortality has dropped by 18% since 2022. Centres like Joynagar are expected to push this number down further.

Empowering Frontline Health Workers

The government is also investing in the upskilling of ASHA workers and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs). These trained health contacts will work closely with Joynagar Centre to ensure rural women receive timely care, follow-ups, and health awareness programs.

Why This Centre Matters for Assam

Assam continues to report one of the highest maternal mortality rates in India. Lack of access, delayed treatment, and unskilled care contribute to avoidable deaths. Facilities like the Joynagar Women Child Care Centre directly address these gaps by offering modern infrastructure, emergency readiness, and trained staff.

Dr. R.K. Nath, a senior pediatrician at the facility, emphasized, “Early care saves lives. This centre allows for timely intervention, which can prevent both maternal and neonatal deaths.”

Access Free Care Under Government Schemes

Eligible women in Joynagar and neighboring districts can now access free services under programs like Janani Suraksha Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
