Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain is all set to give back to the sport that brought her national fame. The ace boxer will inaugurate the Lovlina Boxing Academy in Guwahati on June 3, with the aim of nurturing young talent and elevating the sport of boxing in Assam and beyond.

This landmark initiative by one of India’s most celebrated athletes comes at a time when the need for grassroots-level sports infrastructure is growing. Also, Lovlina, who rose to prominence after clinching a bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, says the academy is a “dream project” built to offer aspiring boxers both mentorship and opportunity.

A Dream Turned Reality for Assam’s Boxing Icon

Lovlina Borgohain, hailing from Assam’s Golaghat district, has always spoken about her desire to promote sports among underprivileged youth. Moreover, the new Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy will serve as a training ground for both beginners and advanced-level athletes, particularly from the Northeast.

Speaking about the academy, Lovlina said,

“This is not just an institution, it’s a platform for dreams. I want the youth of Assam to believe that they, too, can represent India on the global stage.”

The facility in Guwahati is equipped with a modern boxing ring, strength and conditioning units, a physiotherapy center, and boarding facilities for outstation trainees.

Strong Backing from the Government and Sporting Bodies

The launch of the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy has received support from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Assam government. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony along with other prominent sports personalities.

Officials from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) have also pledged technical support and occasional training camps at the academy. Further, according to sources, the facility will follow a structured curriculum combining physical training, nutrition, and psychological development.

Boosting Northeast India’s Sporting Legacy

The Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy is more than just a sports facility—it is a step towards strengthening Northeast India’s position in Indian sports. Besides, the region has historically produced top athletes in boxing, football, and athletics, yet lacks adequate infrastructure.

The academy aims to fill that gap by making professional coaching accessible and affordable. “There’s so much untapped talent in rural Assam. If guided correctly, these youths can become champions,” Lovlina stated.

This move mirrors other successful initiatives like the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation in Manipur, which has produced several national-level boxers.

Support Grassroots Sports Development

With the launch of the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy, the focus now shifts to sustainability. Sports enthusiasts, private sponsors, and government officials must come together to ensure the academy thrives and inspires future Olympians.

The academy is currently open for registrations. Interested candidates can apply through the upcoming online portal, which will be launched post-inauguration. Visit the Assam Sports Department for updates and scholarship information.
