Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, on February 3, reiterated that the state government has been focusing on the development of both the hills and valley regions of the state since 2017. Despite facing significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the ethnic violence that has plagued the region, the BJP-led government has remained committed to its development agenda.
N Biren Singh, who became the Chief Minister of Manipur for the first time in 2017, emphasized the government’s determination to continue its developmental initiatives, even as it faced setbacks due to various crises, including the ongoing ethnic clashes that have left hundreds dead and displaced thousands since May 2023.
Development in the Hills and Valley Regions
Since assuming office in 2017, CM N Biren Singh has consistently worked towards balancing development across the state’s diverse regions, focusing on both the hills and valley areas. Despite the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the loss of nearly two and a half years of productive time, Singh maintained that the government has made significant progress in multiple sectors.
“We may have lost some time due to the pandemic, but despite the difficulties, the government has achieved remarkable milestones,” said the Chief Minister. He stressed that although the government faced several hurdles, including the disruptions caused by the ongoing ethnic violence in the state, development projects in the hills and valley continued without pause.
Overcoming the Challenges of Ethnic Violence
The ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur has had a profound impact on the state’s peace and stability. The violence led to the tragic loss of more than 250 lives, with thousands of people being forced to flee their homes. Despite this, CM Singh highlighted that the state government did not allow the conflict to halt its developmental projects.
In his remarks, the CM acknowledged the impact of the violence on development and the challenges it posed to the state’s growth. However, he pointed out that the government had been proactive in trying to resolve the situation while simultaneously continuing with its developmental plans. Singh expressed his determination to restore peace and stability, ensuring that the state’s progress would not be delayed further.
Focus on Infrastructure Development
One of the key priorities of the N Biren Singh-led government has been to enhance the state’s infrastructure, and this was evident during his speech at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the construction of multi-storied government quarters at Langol, Imphal West district. Singh announced similar plans for the construction of government quarters at New Checkon, Imphal, aimed at providing better facilities for government employees.
Apart from residential developments, the Chief Minister also focused on improving other aspects of infrastructure. He stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and protecting nature, urging citizens to ensure that drains remain unblocked and that the environment is safeguarded. In addition, Singh highlighted ongoing projects such as the rejuvenation of the Lamphalpat wetlands, which, upon completion, will serve as a recreational space for locals and visitors.
New Initiatives for the Future
The Chief Minister also inaugurated several key projects to boost the state’s infrastructure and public facilities. These included the inauguration of the Art and Culture building, as well as an open gymnasium, both aimed at promoting physical well-being and cultural development. Moreover, foundation stones were laid for a 33/11 KVA substation and a swimming pool within the Manipur University campus at Canchipur in Imphal East district. These projects are expected to enhance the state’s power distribution network and provide better recreational options for students and residents.
Singh urged students from all educational institutions in the state to actively contribute to society after completing their studies. His call for the youth’s participation in the development of the state reflected his broader vision of involving all sections of society in Manipur’s progress.
Addressing the Ethnic Conflict Through Dialogue
In response to the ethnic violence and its long-term impact on Manipur, CM N Biren Singh called for a comprehensive discussion involving faculty, teachers, researchers, and students at educational institutions. He suggested that these discussions be aimed at understanding the root causes of the ethnic conflict, which has deeply affected the state’s social fabric. Singh emphasized the need for constructive dialogue as a means of healing the divisions between communities and fostering a more inclusive and peaceful Manipur.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing ethnic violence, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has remained steadfast in his commitment to the development of Manipur. The state’s infrastructure and public services have seen substantial improvements, and the government continues to prioritize both the hills and valley regions equally.
