In a major crackdown on cross-border narcotics trafficking, authorities in Mizoram have seized a huge consignment of contraband drugs worth nearly ₹75 crore on the black market. The seizure was made at Kaipheng along National Highway-06, close to the Tripura border, raising serious concerns about the growing drug menace in the Northeast.

Drugs Smuggled From Myanmar Via Mizoram

According to police sources in Kanchanpur, North Tripura, the narcotics consignment originated from Champhai district of Mizoram, a region bordering Myanmar notorious for cross-border drug trafficking. The drugs were being transported in trucks towards Damcherra in Tripura, with the intention of both local distribution and further smuggling into Bangladesh.

Acting on a credible tip-off, two teams from the Mizoram State Excise Department and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) intercepted the vehicles at Kaipheng. Following an extensive search, they recovered a staggering quantity of 49 kilograms of Yaba tablets—popularly known as “party drugs”—and 360 grams of heroin, both banned substances under the NDPS Act.

Eight Smugglers Arrested

The joint operation also led to the arrest of eight individuals, all hailing from Mizoram. The arrested have been identified as Zoramsiana (25), Lal Ruatkima (42), Namlang Thanga (20), David Lalhomchhuana (28), T. Chhatuan Vanlalhongkaka (29), Lal Ramthara (27), Khangai Hozaua (38), and Lal Rammuana (29).

Investigators suspect that the group is part of an international drug syndicate operating across Myanmar, Mizoram, Tripura, and Bangladesh. The syndicate allegedly uses the Northeast as a corridor to push synthetic drugs into Indian markets while diverting large quantities across the border.

Tripura Emerging as a Key Transit Point

Security officials fear that Tripura has increasingly become a major transit hub for drug smuggling due to its strategic location and porous international border with Bangladesh. The easy availability of narcotics like Yaba and heroin poses a dual threat: fueling addiction among local youths and strengthening organized criminal networks in the region.

Authorities are now focusing on strengthening surveillance along National Highway-06 and tightening checks at vulnerable entry points to curb trafficking. Senior police officials have also stressed the need for closer coordination between Mizoram, Tripura, and central agencies like the NCB to dismantle cross-border drug cartels.

Crackdown Underway

All eight accused have been booked under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They were produced before a local court and remanded to custody for further interrogation. Investigations are ongoing to trace the wider network involved in the smuggling operation.

Officials have indicated that this bust is one of the largest in recent times in the Northeast, underscoring the growing threat of narcotics trafficking in the region.

The seizure not only highlights the alarming scale of drug smuggling into Tripura but also signals the urgent need for a coordinated crackdown on syndicates that are exploiting the vulnerable international borders of the Northeast.
