The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a key ally in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, has called for a central agency investigation into serious allegations of fake degrees and certificates issued by the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM).

The allegations were made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who claimed that USTM has been involved in granting fraudulent academic credentials. The controversy has sparked concerns over the credibility of degrees issued by the university and their potential impact on students’ futures.

Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Allegations Against USTM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently accused USTM of issuing fake degrees, a claim that has intensified scrutiny of the private university, which operates a 1,000-bed hospital and medical college on the Assam-Meghalaya border.

Sarma has warned that the Assam government may revoke recognition of degrees awarded by USTM, a move that could jeopardize the academic and professional prospects of numerous students.

BJP’s Call for a Central Investigation

Meghalaya BJP General Secretary Wankitbok Pohshna emphasized the need for a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations.

“This accusation is grave and demands an impartial investigation by a neutral agency. Even the slightest suspicion of fake degrees and certificates can have devastating consequences on a student’s future, potentially ruining many promising careers. In such a scenario, the government must step in to investigate and ensure that the truth is brought to light,” Pohshna stated.

Pohshna also highlighted that since the allegations came from a sitting Chief Minister of a neighboring state, they should not be taken lightly. He urged the Meghalaya government to initiate an independent judicial inquiry without waiting for an official notice.

Potential Consequences of Fake Degree Allegations

Impact on Students

  • If the allegations are proven true, students who obtained degrees from USTM could face severe consequences in their careers.
  • Employers and government agencies may refuse to recognize degrees issued by the university.
  • If Assam revokes recognition of USTM degrees, graduates may find it difficult to secure jobs or pursue higher studies.

Legal and Institutional Ramifications

  • If an investigation confirms the issuance of fake degrees, strict legal action could be taken against USTM and its administration.
  • The university may face de-recognition or restrictions on issuing degrees.
  • A central probe could lead to reforms in private university regulations in Meghalaya and other northeastern states.

USTM’s History of Controversy

This is not the first time USTM has been in the spotlight for controversy. Last year, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma accused the university of involvement in a so-called “flood jihad” in Guwahati. The institution vehemently denied these allegations.

Meghalaya Government’s Position on the Issue

The Meghalaya government, led by Conrad K. Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP), has not yet officially responded to the BJP’s demand for a central probe. However, given the severity of the allegations and their potential impact on higher education in the state, the government may be compelled to act.

The BJP, which has two MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, plays a crucial role in the ruling alliance. Their demand for an investigation could put pressure on the NPP-led government to take action.

Why a Central Investigation Is Necessary?

A central probe would serve two key purposes:

  1. Legal Action If Allegations Are True: If USTM is found guilty of issuing fake degrees, legal measures can be swiftly taken to hold those responsible accountable.
  2. Clearing the Institution’s Name If Innocent: If the accusations are baseless, an independent investigation would help restore USTM’s credibility and assure students about the validity of their degrees.

The allegations against the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) have raised major concerns in the education sector. With the Assam government considering revoking recognition of USTM degrees, students face uncertainty about their academic qualifications.

The Meghalaya BJP’s demand for a central probe underscores the gravity of the situation. A fair and transparent investigation is essential to uncover the truth, protect students’ futures, and maintain the credibility of higher education in Meghalaya.
