Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday, November 5, laid the foundation stone for a 100-bedded Integrated Hospital at Ummulong in West Jaiñtia Hills district. The project, estimated to cost Rs 53 crore, aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and improve access to medical services for people living in rural communities.

The proposed hospital is expected to benefit residents of Ummulong and neighbouring villages. It will bring essential healthcare facilities closer to communities that often face challenges in accessing medical services.

The foundation-laying ceremony marks an important step in the state’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery beyond major urban centres. The government aims to strengthen both primary and secondary healthcare facilities through infrastructure development and improved medical services.

Hospital to Strengthen Rural Healthcare

Announcing the development, Sangma said the Integrated Hospital forms part of the government’s broader efforts to improve healthcare access, particularly in rural areas.

He highlighted the importance of making essential medical services available closer to local communities. According to the Chief Minister, the project will help address gaps in healthcare infrastructure and improve the delivery of medical services in the region.

The 100-bedded facility is expected to serve people from Ummulong and surrounding villages. Its location in West Jaiñtia Hills could reduce the difficulties faced by rural residents who need to travel to distant healthcare centres for treatment.

The project also reflects the state’s focus on strengthening district-level healthcare facilities. Better access to medical infrastructure can help patients receive timely attention and reduce the pressure on larger hospitals.

Government Highlights Eight Years of Healthcare Development

During the announcement, Sangma highlighted the state government’s efforts over the past eight years to address challenges in healthcare infrastructure and manpower.

He said the government has worked to improve medical facilities while expanding medical education to increase the availability of doctors in Meghalaya.

Healthcare development requires both adequate infrastructure and trained medical professionals. Hospitals need sufficient doctors, nurses and support staff to provide reliable services. The government has therefore focused on addressing manpower shortages alongside infrastructure improvements.

The Ummulong project is part of this wider approach to strengthening the state’s healthcare system. The proposed facility is expected to support the delivery of primary and secondary healthcare services to people in the district.

Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla Acknowledged

The Chief Minister acknowledged Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and the Health Department for conceptualising the project and taking it forward.

Shylla had earlier inspected the Ummulong Community Health Centre in June 2026 ahead of its proposed upgrade into an Integrated Hospital. During the visit, he reviewed the existing infrastructure and discussed preparations for the project.

The proposed upgrade was expected to benefit villages under the Thadlaskein and Namdong community and administrative blocks. The project was estimated to require an investment of Rs 53 crore.

The foundation stone ceremony now marks a major milestone in moving the hospital project forward.

CM Emphasises Compassionate Patient Care

Beyond infrastructure development, Sangma stressed the importance of compassion and kindness in healthcare services.

He said quality healthcare involves more than medicines and medical facilities. Patients also need understanding, care and support from healthcare professionals.

The Chief Minister urged people involved in healthcare delivery to remember the human side of medical treatment while the government continues investing in infrastructure.

His remarks highlighted the need to combine better facilities with responsible and patient-centred healthcare services.

A Major Step for West Jaiñtia Hills

The proposed Integrated Hospital represents a significant investment in the healthcare infrastructure of West Jaiñtia Hills. For residents of Ummulong and nearby villages, improved access to medical services could make a meaningful difference.

The project also reflects Meghalaya’s continued efforts to strengthen rural healthcare and address the unequal distribution of medical facilities across the state.

With the foundation stone now laid, attention will turn towards the construction and eventual operationalisation of the 100-bedded hospital. Its timely completion, adequate staffing and availability of essential medical services will be important in ensuring that local communities receive the intended benefits.
