Mizoram is grappling with a surge in dengue cases, with 20 reported infections in the early weeks of 2024. This alarming rise comes on the heels of a record-breaking year in 2023, where the state recorded the highest number of dengue cases ever, resulting in two fatalities.
Rising Dengue Cases in Mizoram
Last year, the Mizoram Health Department conducted tests on 12,949 blood samples, revealing that 2,060 individuals tested positive for dengue. Tragically, the actual number of infections and fatalities could be higher, as testing was primarily conducted using the enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) method.
Dengue made its first appearance in Mizoram in 2013, with the first reported death attributed to the disease occurring in 2022. Since then, the state has seen a steady increase in dengue cases. From 2013 until January 21, 2024, a total of 5,082 people have been infected with dengue, and the disease has claimed seven lives.
Dengue-related Fatalities
In 2022, five fatalities were reported due to dengue, and this number increased to two in 2023. The situation is concerning, especially as the state is already grappling with the public health challenges posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Dengue is a viral disease primarily transmitted by female mosquitoes, mainly of the Aedes aegypti species and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus. The Aedes mosquitoes are known for their aggressive daytime biting habits, making them efficient vectors for dengue virus transmission.
No Specific Treatment
The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes that there is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue. Early detection of disease progression associated with severe dengue, coupled with timely access to proper medical care, significantly lowers the fatality rates of severe dengue to below 1%.
Mizoram’s Battle Against Dengue
Mizoram faces a challenging battle against dengue, necessitating a comprehensive strategy for prevention, early detection, and medical intervention. Efforts to control the Aedes mosquito population, public awareness campaigns, and strengthening healthcare infrastructure are crucial components of the state’s response to this escalating health crisis.
