Introduction:
A multi-talented artist hailing from Agartala, Tripura, whose journey encompasses the realms of music and acting. With a self-taught approach and a passion for storytelling, Karnajit has carved a unique path in the industry. In this exclusive interview, he shares insights into his background, experiences, and aspirations, providing a glimpse into the vibrant world of his artistic pursuits.
Let’s kickstart the interview by diving straight into the conversation.
Could you please begin by providing our audience with a brief introduction about yourself? Tell us about your background, your journey as a musician and actor, and any other highlights you would like to share.
Hey everyone, I’m Karnajit Bhattacharjee, born and raised in Agartala, Tripura. Currently, I work as a Branch Operations Manager at a bank, but my true passion lies in the world of performing arts. From a young age, I’ve been deeply interested in various forms of art, be it dancing, painting, music, or movies. I’m completely self-taught in my artistic pursuits, whether it’s playing the drums or creating films. Throughout my journey, I’ve relied on platforms like YouTube and countless books as my teachers.
Overview of Music Journey:
As an ex-band member of various bands, can you give us a concise overview of your experiences and journey in the music industry?
Well, my journey in the music industry has been quite a rollercoaster ride, but it has been an incredibly fulfilling one. I’ve had the pleasure of jamming with some amazing musicians and bands in our state. Currently, due to time constraints, I do freelance work, which has become a remarkable learning experience. Each time I perform, I get to explore different genres and entertain diverse audiences. As a musician and drummer, I feel like I’m growing every single day.
Talking about the music scene in Tripura as a whole, I’ve noticed that a significant portion of the audience is still hesitant to embrace non-mainstream music. However, I firmly believe that with time, there will be broader acceptance. Most musicians, including myself, pursue music as a passion and part-time activity because becoming a full-time musician is still a distant dream due to the lack of sustainable infrastructure.
Venturing into Acting:
You have also ventured into acting, having worked in several music videos. What inspired you to explore this art form, and what draws you to acting?
Interestingly, my journey into acting began accidentally when one of my ex-bandmates insisted on casting me in his music video for “Mohini.” I gave it my best shot and the final product turned out to be beautiful. It was an incredibly satisfying experience, and soon enough, other bands and artists started approaching me to appear in their videos. I even got the opportunity to work in a couple of movies. However, the turning point came with the movie “Stutter,” which completely changed everything. Being interviewed by Borok Times today is an absolute honor and a testament to how far I’ve come.
What really attracts me to acting, or rather filmmaking, is the art of storytelling. The ability to bring a story to life has always fascinated me. And on a lighter note, acting allows me to portray different characters, live multiple lives, and do things that I could never do in reality.
Balancing Passions:
Balancing a career as an independent artist and working in the banking sector can be quite demanding. How do you effectively manage your time and find inspiration to pursue both passions?
Well, it all boils down to sheer willpower. Yes, things can get really crazy and tough at times, and there are moments when they even feel impossible. However, I take planning and execution seriously because the one thing I fear the most is missing out on an opportunity. I try to seize every chance that comes my way. Of course, I fail most of the time, but those rare moments of success truly fuel my motivation and keep me going. The journey itself, the process, brings me more happiness than the final outcome.
Upcoming Projects:
Are there any upcoming projects, whether in music or acting, that you are particularly excited about and would like to share with your friends?
I don’t like using the word “fans” specifically. I consider all of you as my friends, well-wishers, supporters, and extended family who have always been there for me unconditionally. With that being said, I’m extremely thrilled about two feature films that are in the final editing phase and will soon be released. Additionally, there’s a music video that will be featured by Zee Music.
The first film is titled “Opom,” a horror movie entirely shot in Arunachal, which is based on a famous Arunachali folklore. The second film is “Savitri,” a mystery thriller revolving around occultism and mythology.
Future Plans and Aspirations:
What are your future plans and aspirations in the fields of music and acting? Are there specific milestones or goals you are aiming to achieve?
At the moment, I can’t provide a definitive answer, but I can assure you that my associates and I have meticulously planned something in collaboration with the State Government that has the potential to revolutionize filmmaking in Tripura. We remain hopeful and fully committed to this endeavor. Fingers crossed!
Education and Artistic Pursuits:
We are curious to learn about your educational background. How has your education influenced your artistic pursuits, and do you believe it has played a significant role in shaping your career?
I completed my schooling at SKMS and later attended Bhavans. I pursued my graduation from MIT Pune and obtained an MBA from ICFAI. Education has played a vital role in my artistic pursuits. It has provided me with clarity, aided in decision-making, and helped organize my thoughts and actions. Moreover, it has boosted my confidence. All these qualities are extremely important for an artist, don’t you think?
Life Experiences and Challenges:
Can you share any life experiences or challenges that have profoundly impacted your journey as a musician and actor?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced as an artist in Tripura is the issue of remuneration. I’m confident that musicians and filmmakers would agree with me on this one. It’s incredibly tough to make a living solely as a full-time artist in Tripura without any additional sources of income.
Advice for Aspiring Artists:
Drawing from your experiences in both the music and acting industries, what valuable insights or advice can you offer to aspiring artists who are looking to pursue a similar path?
“Just keep going, never miss out on any opportunity if you really want to do something. Don’t overthink it. Sitting on the sidelines and just pondering about swimming doesn’t count as swimming. If you truly want to swim, you gotta get in the water. So just dive in!”
Showcasing Culture and Leaving a Mark:
As an artist representing Tripura, how do you feel about showcasing the culture and talent of your region? Do you draw inspiration from your roots in your creative work?
Absolutely! My roots run deep, and you’ll find traces of our vibrant culture in everything I’ve accomplished thus far, and even more in the projects to come.
Message to Fans and Aspiring Artists:
Lastly, is there any message or advice you would like to convey to your friends and aspiring artists who are determined to leave their mark in the music and acting industry?
