Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially inaugurated Meluri as the 17th district of Nagaland during a grand function at Meluri Public Ground. Previously a sub-division under Phek district, Meluri was upgraded to a full-fledged district on November 2, 2024.

The historic event, organized by Pochury Hoho, the apex tribal body, in collaboration with the district administration, was attended by several ministers, legislators, Naga tribal leaders, and thousands of people from the Pochury community.

Meluri, spread over 1,011 sq. km with 34 villages, is known for its mineral deposits, biodiversity, and natural beauty. Rio stated that the district’s rich resources position it as an emerging hub for economic and ecological development in Nagaland.

Monolith Unveiling and Inauguration of Multidiscipline Sports Stadium

As part of the inauguration, CM Neiphiu Rio unveiled a monolith, symbolizing the official recognition of Meluri as a new district.

He also inaugurated a multidiscipline sports stadium in Meluri, a significant infrastructure addition aimed at promoting sports and youth development in the region. The stadium is expected to encourage local athletes and enhance sporting activities in the newly formed district.

A Historic Step for the Pochury Community

The creation of Meluri district fulfills a long-standing demand of the Pochury community, a major indigenous Naga tribe. CM Rio congratulated the Pochury people and acknowledged their efforts in advocating for the district’s formation.

He also appreciated the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO), the apex body of Phek district, for their cooperation and issuance of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) that enabled Meluri’s elevation to district status.

The support of Chakhesang and Pochury leaders played a crucial role in making this long-awaited administrative change a reality.
