National Highway-8 (NH-8) has collapsed in the Birchandra Manu area of the Santirbazar subdivision, South Tripura district, due to intense rainfall that occurred overnight between Monday and Tuesday. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) confirmed the incident and reported that the affected stretch of the highway measures approximately 25 meters.

In response to the incident, an immediate investigation has been launched to determine the precise cause of the highway collapse. The district administration has also taken action, urging the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to promptly initiate repair work on the damaged NH-8 section. Officials from the SEOC stated that repair efforts are being undertaken urgently.

The NHIDCL, a government-owned enterprise under the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, will play a pivotal role in the restoration and repair of the compromised highway section.

Simultaneously, heavy rainfall has taken a toll on more than 50 houses across Tripura, exacerbating the ongoing challenges caused by the relentless monsoon. In the past week alone, 137 houses have sustained damage in various areas of Tripura, with the Dhalai district being particularly affected.

Meteorological reports predict that the state will continue to experience rain and thundershowers in multiple regions. The local weather office anticipates heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated pockets across various districts, including North Tripura, Unakoti, Gomati, South Tripura, West Tripura, and Sepahijala. Particularly, Dhalai and Khowai districts are expected to witness very heavy rainfall in isolated places.

As the state navigates these challenges, residents are advised to remain cautious while weather conditions unfold. The temperature is projected to range between approximately 25 and 28 degrees Celsius for the upcoming days. The recent incident follows a similar episode in April, during which thunderstorms damaged 2,461 houses across Tripura.
