In a significant development, two self-styled leaders affiliated with the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) were apprehended by authorities in the West Tripura district upon entering India from Bangladesh. The former chief of army staff, Sachin Debbarma, and the political secretary, Utpal Debbarma, known for their involvement in various illicit activities, were arrested on Thursday night near the international border in the Simna area.
Background of Sachin Debbarma and Utpal Debbarma:
Sachin Debbarma, a resident of Sidhai in West Tripura district and former chief of the NLFT, has a history marked by killings and attacks on security personnel. Despite no longer holding a prominent position within the organization, Sachin remains a key figure within the outlawed group. His counterpart, Utpal Debbarma, who served as the political secretary, was recognized as a strategic mind within the NLFT, contributing to its sinister activities such as abductions, extortions, and waging war against the country.
Meticulously Planned Operation:
The arrest operation was meticulously planned based on specific intelligence inputs indicating the duo’s entry into Indian territory from Bangladesh. Special Branch DIG Krishnendu Chakraborty highlighted the successful execution of the operation, stating, “We had specific inputs that Sachin and Utpal will enter the state’s territory from Bangladesh on Thursday night. We laid traps and apprehended them when they crossed over the border from Bangladesh.”
Legal Proceedings and Pending Cases:
Following the apprehension, an extensive interrogation was conducted at the SB headquarters. Subsequently, both individuals were handed over to the West Tripura police to initiate legal proceedings, considering the multiple pending cases against them. Chakraborty confirmed, “They will be produced before the court on Friday.”
The arrest of these notorious NLFT leaders marks a crucial step in curbing the activities of the banned outfit. With a history of violence and criminal involvement, the apprehension of Sachin Debbarma and Utpal Debbarma underscores the concerted efforts to maintain law and order in the region.
