Northeast India engine of growth — that’s how Arunachal Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein described the region during a development conclave held in Itanagar on Tuesday. He said the Northeast, once seen as a remote corner, is fast becoming central to India’s economic rise in the 21st century.

Act East Policy Fuels Growth Momentum

Chowna Mein credited the Act East Policy for this rapid shift. He said the policy has turned the region into a strategic hub. Projects like new highways, railways, and border trade routes have drastically improved connectivity.

According to him, this transformation is not accidental. “Earlier, Northeast India was left behind. But now, we are connecting to Southeast Asia. We are part of India’s trade future,” he said.

Mein also noted that the central government has shown strong commitment. “The Prime Minister has visited the Northeast more than 60 times since 2014. That shows how important this region is,” he added.

Arunachal’s Unique Contribution

Mein emphasized Arunachal’s role in this shift. The state, he said, offers unmatched potential in hydropower, eco-tourism, and agriculture. He explained that Arunachal’s rivers can generate clean energy for the entire Northeast.

Besides power, the state is developing its tourism sector. “Eco-tourism in Tawang, Ziro, and Mechuka is growing fast. Better roads have opened up new travel opportunities,” he said.

Additionally, he pointed out that farmers in Arunachal are now exporting organic produce to other states. “That was unthinkable ten years ago,” Mein noted.

Youth and Innovation at the Center

The Deputy CM stressed that local youth will shape the region’s future. He spoke about the need for skill development, startup support, and better digital access.

“Young people here are full of ideas. With training and tech, they can compete globally,” he said. The state is planning new innovation hubs and digital skill centers in remote districts.

He also encouraged youth to start local businesses in tourism, IT services, and food processing. “We don’t need to look outside. Our youth can build industries here,” he added.

Investors Eyeing Northeast Growth Potential

Mein invited Indian and foreign investors to explore the region. He said Northeast India now offers ease of business, good connectivity, and market access.

He highlighted the North East Industrial Development Scheme (NEIDS). It provides tax relief, capital subsidies, and transport support to industries.

“From agriculture to logistics, there’s massive scope here. This is the best time to invest,” he said. Arunachal will soon host a Global Investors’ Summit to attract more interest.

Vibrant Borders, Safer Nation

Mein also spoke about development along the borders. He said border villages are being turned into vibrant settlements with homes, schools, and health centers.

“We want people to live proudly in our border areas. Their presence supports national security,” he stated.

The Vibrant Villages Programme, he said, is active in more than 100 villages across Arunachal. These areas now have electricity, mobile towers, and internet — for the first time.

A United Northeast for a Stronger India

The Deputy CM called for unity among Northeastern states. He urged leaders to share ideas, push for joint projects, and build stronger links across the region.

“Together, we can form an eastern economic corridor that will power India’s rise. Our cultures may differ, but our goals are the same,” he said.

He also praised the growing coordination between the central and state governments. This, he believes, has accelerated everything from roads to health services.

Vision for the Next Decade

In his closing remarks, Mein said the Northeast India engine of growth is not just a slogan — it’s a reality in motion. “With the right policies and support, this region can become India’s next big economic frontier,” he concluded.

He added that if current efforts continue, the Northeast will be known not as a distant region but as a launchpad for India’s global role.
