Paul Lyngdoh has returned to the Meghalaya Cabinet after taking oath as a minister on Monday, November 2, 2026. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma congratulated him and wished him dedication and commitment in his new responsibilities.

The induction marks another political development in Meghalaya, where recent defections have reshaped the position of several parties within the ruling alliance. Lyngdoh’s return to the Cabinet follows his move from the United Democratic Party (UDP) to the National People’s Party (NPP).

Paul Lyngdoh returns to the Meghalaya Cabinet

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan in Shillong. Lyngdoh represents West Shillong. His appointment fills the vacancy left by former minister and UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh. The appointment restores him to the executive team as the state government adjusts to a changed Assembly balance. His move also places him among legislators who chose the NPP after the UDP’s strength declined. The new minister’s departmental responsibilities are expected to clarify the areas he will oversee.

Metbah resigned from the Council of Ministers on October 31. His departure came after a series of political changes weakened the UDP’s presence in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The party, which won 12 seats in the 2023 Assembly election, has since lost most of its legislators to rival parties.

Lyngdoh previously served in the Conrad Sangma-led Cabinet, holding the tourism portfolio before the September 2025 reshuffle. His latest induction brings him back into the government after more than a year.

Paul Lyngdoh’s move to the NPP

The minister’s return follows his recent departure from the UDP and entry into the ruling NPP. He was among three former UDP legislators who moved to the NPP in October. The other two were Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Nujorki Sungoh.

The NPP welcomed Paul Lyngdoh and Renikton Lyngdoh at its headquarters on October 28. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong handed over their membership certificates. Sungoh could not attend because he was unwell.

The three legislators sought to merge with the NPP after eight other UDP MLAs joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in September. The UDP’s strength fell, while the NPP and BJP increased their Assembly numbers.

A changing political picture in Meghalaya

The changes have altered the balance within the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA). Reports put the NPP’s Assembly strength at 36 and the BJP’s at 10. Both remain constituents of the NPP-led government.

The UDP won 12 seats in the 2023 Assembly election and emerged as the second-largest party. However, the departure of 11 MLAs has left it with only one member in the Assembly.

The eight legislators who joined the BJP and the three who moved to the NPP took different political routes. The latest Cabinet induction follows the vacancy created by Metbah Lyngdoh’s resignation.

These developments highlight the changing political equations within Meghalaya’s ruling alliance. Moreover, the ministerial changes come at a time when parties are adjusting their positions following the recent defections.

Previous experience in the tourism department

During his earlier Cabinet term, Paul Lyngdoh handled tourism and took an interest in sector initiatives, including the proposed Shillong Peak Ropeway project. The project has faced scrutiny after the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council raised objections.

The tourism portfolio is currently listed under Cabinet minister Timothy D. Shira on the Meghalaya government’s published Council of Ministers page. The government has not been cited in the reports as confirming which department Lyngdoh will receive after taking oath. His portfolio allocation therefore remains a separate matter from his induction.

Paul Lyngdoh faces fresh responsibilities

Attention will now turn to the responsibilities assigned to the West Shillong MLA. The Chief Minister’s message stressed dedication and commitment as Lyngdoh takes up the role.

The induction comes as the ruling alliance adjusts to changes in its political composition and continues its administrative work.

For Lyngdoh, the oath marks a return to executive office after his tourism tenure ended in 2025. His new departments have yet to be confirmed.

Overall, his appointment fills a vacancy in the Meghalaya ministry and reflects the changing political equations within the MDA. The next step will be the announcement of his portfolio and the priorities he will take forward as a member of the state Cabinet in the months ahead of him.
